3 had that cool thing where the time of day changed and reflected the story/created unique scenarios, which I don’t remember seeing in games before that. I much preferred the espionage element to it as well. But 2 was absolutely astonishing to my fifteen year old self. I find it hard to choose one over the other either. 3 is far more accomplished to my mind but 2 is more exciting I guess? 4 is a total Kojima kitchen sink scenario. I’d love to replay it. I know it’s quite divisive for people, but it’s tied to when I first got a PS3 and I have a lot of fond memories of it.

Hell Let Loose update looks gorgeous in its very grim way.

I just finished playing through MGS3 (on Xbox) and MGS (on PS Vita). They’re both so much fun to play. The direction & cinematography are so great in both as well.

This was the first time I’d finished 3 and I might agree about it being the best in the series. When I played it in 2004 I remember finding the lack of a radar really annoying, but it totally changes how you have to think about the stealth. It gives the game a much slower pace than the first two, but every second feels more tense & exciting as a result.

I’m saving 2 for a bit because I’ve played it so many times already, but I started The Phantom Pain and Peace Walker for the first time today. Though tbh maybe I’ll just play 3 again… I killed The End before the boss fight to get the achievement but that obviously meant I missed out on a really great fight.

I’ve come to love it now, some scattered thoughta below.

There’s still some shit like the mostly useless praetor suit upgrades, the shitty hub world, the exp bonuses you get at the end of a level - what even are these? Multiplayer? Loot boxes? I don’t care to find out.

It starts really badly, the first 2 levels are easily the worst in the game. Level design and encounters ramp up massively after this and it feels like doom 16 on steroids for large parts of the game.

The ice bomb and flame belch are brilliant additions, I love freezing a batch of enemies, flaming and then grenading them to burst out a shower of health and armor pickups. A great way to recover from a big hit.

Blood punch is largely m’eh. Seems it exists to strip armor from the heavier demons but it’s easy to forget it exists.

Given doom is a game about movement and resource management, it really does a brilliant job of levelling this up. Dash, double jump and chain feel amazing once you’re zipping around the map.

I’ve also come to appreciate the limited ammo, divisive as it may be. It forces you to use different weapons and become proficient with all of them, saving some for certain scenarios, but there’s still enough chainsaw fuel around that you rarely completely run dry.

Weak points are also great, you can still kill them any way you want but it is very rewarding to swap to the cannon, snap into the scope and blow off a mancubus turret, snap back to the shotgun, grenade his head and then scope the other turret while he’s staggered. Loads of stuff like that just adds depth and skill to the combat where it wasn’t there in 16.

Im only in the arc tower, so it could all go to shit now but stick with it and it’ll grow on you

Most people I hear talk about it say it gets real bad at the end with the gates which is why I gave up after finding the start of the game pish as I just assumed it was all down hill from there

God I’m good at DOTA

Tis the best anyone playing Dota deserves

I tried playing League because I’ve got more penoid pals who are into it but was immediately put off by the tits and bums everywhere. It’s bad enough being a MOBA player without being one of those gamers.

Although I will admit that Huskar’s abs are extremely distracting

Also his thighs

…might fancy an internet wizard troll

Also spotted Xenoblade Chronicles, Tomb Raider, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokemon, Overwatch, Duke Nukem and Quake in there.

Ah I will totally listen to the Overwatch one so I can listen to people (correctly) geek out over the sound design and how subtle animations in the way the characters hold/reload their gun is peak Blizzard game design.

You kind of know exactly how a character plays just by looking at how they hold their weapon and how loud their footsteps are which is pretty wild to me

The fact every character has their own footsteps means you know exactly whose trying to sneak up on you - and it makes the footsteps of more ‘dangerous’ characters louder.

Very excited as someone who appreciates good game design

Excited about the Dukes, Tomb Raider, and I guess Quake (though I never played that personally)

Kind of bummed there hasn’t (seemingly) been one of their 30 hour year summaries. Could do with one of those this year (though I think i’d have to clear space on my phone)

They’re covering lots of recent games too. I think they abandoned the rule about ‘you need two years’ breathing space last Volume and so there are fairly recent 2020 heavy hitters getting some love too.

Oh. And some indie piece of shit called Celeste?

what’s the context of this?

Coming towards the end of God of War now after about of month of playing it, and I have to agree with the plaudits it received when it was released. Just a very, very enjoyable game; engrossing but not overwhelming - felt it found a nice balance between not being too linear but also not being an open world game where the pace of the action falls off for hours as you get lost in the wilderness. The central story is very slight, but i think that works in its favour somewhat - it doesn’t pile on too much of the fantasy mumbo jumbo that sometimes weighs down these kind of games and it made the side tasks feel more than just a distraction.

Also enjoyed the humourless stone cold delivery of Kratos mixed with the chirpy attitude of the head.

Some suggestions for minor improvements for the next game would be:

A slightly larger cast of characters. The world felt a bit empty at times and I got a bit tired of that Brok geezer rocking up everywhere.

Whilst I enjoyed gaining new skills through experience points, the other way of levelling up (finding artefacts, having the dwarves improve them etc) didn’t always feel like it was worth it. I kept getting new armour that never seemed to alter my general stats all that much, and such fine tweaks didn’t seem necessary to beat any of the foes i encountered. Having said that, I haven’t taken on any of the Valkyries yet, so maybe the small margins in battles like that might require a fine tuned set up?

On the combat, it was generally very satisfying but could maybe use a bit more variety in the enemies you face. Seemed like quite a bit of repetition throughout.

All in all, a good use of hours of my time over xmas/new years
