Celeste argument in the sense that game goes out of its way to make its self accessible to everybody?

  • Playing RE:VILLage thicc vampire lady day 1
  • play it eventually
  • Not

I DONT DO HORROR

RE 2 got the balance right but these newer ‘original’ ones are very horror centric - too much so for ol’ jumpy bollocks like me

It does do that and thats how it’s talked about now, but it wasn’t the discourse at the time from what I remember?

Lots of initial reviews were saying like Super Meat Boy before it, it was very, very challenging, but for good reason contextually. I recall then a wave of follow up pieces that also pointed out ways in which you can tweak the options to get through sections if you are struggling, but then ‘that lot’ on social media who only think a good game is one where you have to beat it with no health and blindfolded piled in.

Gatekeeping in video games is stupid - thankfully the mentality appears to be waning overtime - either that or I just avoid such outlets these days

Yeah I agree. Definitely used to feel with Souls chat that you hadn’t beaten it unless you’d done it all solo and hindered in some way.

Whereas people now are far more encouraging to just enjoy the ride albeit with called in help or using objects / tricks to cheese obstacles.

I even think a lot of these games are now designing themselves to be enjoyed in such a way. Bloodborne had various ways in which it provides areas to grind / level up in or call for reinforcements on. Hades drops get bigger and better as you power up.

I like the approach of games like Hollow Knight and Mario where the really, really hard stuff is there if you want it post-credits, but it’s still a fun ride if you can’t be arsed with that hardship.

i agree but not because it’s too scary I’M WELL TOUGH, ME

but it basically goes:

  1. glorified point and click resi games
  2. 3rd person puzzle shooters resi
  3. 1st person whatever they are boring games

And after playing some of those old Master System games a few weekends back, trust me when I say NONE of these games are remotely hard compared to having to beat an entire game with 3 credits in one sitting and no save states.

All arguments break down in favour of removing accessibility as a choice due to some grand vision/it breaks the experience when you realise that difficulty is relative and people on lower difficulties CAN get the same experience as you and dont necessarily want it to be a cakewalk. The fact people assume people want an easier difficulty because they want to sleepwalk it are far too locked into their own perspective.

Not saying it has to be mandated but the sooner people realise people asking for a difficulty slider are asking for it so they can have the same experience as others but are unable to due to the barrier to entry the better

Will get on this when it rapidly drops in price

probably going to get it at some point but then I never finished 7 and I kind of feel like I should before getting this for some reason

probably more likely to get the RE3 Remake at some point though, or just finish my Claire B playthrough on RE2 Remake. that kind of game appeals to me much more than the first person RE games tbh.

urghh make sure you get re3 for dirt cheap if you’re gonna play it, such a rip off

that’s the plan :+1:

Blows my mind that people can get far in it quickly, just cause my memories are all wound up in the looooooong stretches between episodes

Yeah I didn’t realise the episodes came out years apart!

The Steam discussion boards were SO angry

After there not being much for a while, it’s a real glut of games right now. I’m trying to finish a Disco Elysium playthrough and get on to Returnal, but I’m keen to play Resident Evil 8 on day one. First game I’ve pre-ordered in ages.

Then there’s Mass Effect later on in the month…

If you don’t replay games much, I’d really hold off on Resident Evil 3 until it’s a tenner or less. I really like it (and feel like one of the few people who do) but for me what works about it is replaying it over and over and trying to unlock different stuff. I’ve kept it installed all year I play through it when I want something to comfortably blast through in an afternoon. Even then, it’s just not as good as the remake for 2.
