probably gonna get a yamaha reface dx, the digitone looks loads cooler for FM synth, but can probably get a reface cheap second hand, and its the old dx7 type sounds I want that the dx can definitely do, also hope it can do old soundblaster computer game sounds as they had a yamaha FM chip in

in advance of getting this I thought i’d play around with the equator software that came with my seaboard block as it has a basic FM synth option (3 operators). having so much fun, I have no idea what I am doing but getting some really cool warped glassy space ship sounds, seems a really good match for the seaboard block, as I guess with FM synth the idea is that you set up the envelopes, tuning and depths of the operators and you get really complex evolving sounds, but the seaboard lets you modulate those parameters with aftertouch and its other dimensions of control, so you are modulating the modulators, ends up sounding like chaotic nonsense, but fun none the less

Creating FM sounds feels like a bit of a crapshoot sometimes but it’s great fun - especially when you can get busy with multiple envelopes and LFOs and whatnot

this is obviously nonsense but still think its cool how all these changes in sound can be done just with how hard the keys are pressed rather than knob twiddling, imagine someone who knew what they were doing could make some cool sounds with it

yeah I wonder if it is possible to get the hang of it or whether it is a case of just experimenting and then saving the patch when stumbling across something cool

bit confused as to how it works in equator, as you can use the same oscillators for non-fm synths and so the course tuning is just changing the note, but presumably those are equal temperament notes, but the video says FM works best with simple ratios so the 12-tet tuning won’t be right, wonder if the fine tuning needs to be used in addition to the course to get those simple ratios

I’m getting there - although apparantly the digitone is easier than an original dx7. I’m finding it easier to make a sound from scratch now rather than just tweaking a preset. I watched a few youtubes and sort of stripped away the layers of some presets to work out what was going on. You learn to save sounds often though as you can go from “cool sound” to “awful racket” quite quickly and it can be hard to get back to where you were if you didn’t save

i’ve already lost a few sounds I would have liked to have kept already in equator. I think the reface DX comes with an editor software so I hope that will make it easier, as the control panel looks a bit fiddly. so far with equator everything ends up like a bell sound, weird how I thought of bells as being quite pure sounding when it seems like they are not

one cool thing with the seaboard block/equator is I can set it to modulate the course tuning by pressure on the key, and then try it out and listen out for the sweet spots

My secret to finding a sound is to sequence something 1st (appropriate to the kind of sound you are going for) then have that playing while you tweak your sound

Nice! I’ll ook forward to some digitone chat. This guy is worth checking out

Do yourself a favour and print out the full manual - the quick start thing you get in the box is all but useless
