Gear Wanker thread Mk III

Only just seen that the Vintera III series apparently leaked. I do not need a Sherwood Green jaguar with matching headstock… I do not need one…

Aluminium neck guitar? :white_check_mark:
Matamp with a 4x10 cab? :white_check_mark:

Who wants to form a clangy doom/drone/noise-rock band?

@colossalhorse I’m looking at you…

Anything where I can nap between chords works for me. I just need to buy a guitar and remember how guitars work.

Guys, he’s about to put all his gear on ebay for rock bottom prices and spend the next month just using squash in the texture module on everything.

Some deals to be had.

Unlikely

But we’ll see

(We’ll also see how squash compares to overloading everything through a parallel aux channel through the RE-501)

Straight out of the box there’s one missing ‘feature’ that’s annoyed me already. Why couldn’t they put some little rubber feet on it?! Very nearly scratched the top of the MIDImini :grimacing:

Otherwise, looks tasty. Can’t wait to dive in

What sort of wondrous guitar and amp is this?

I thought my days of guitar and amp envy were over, but apparently they are not.

Love it that my studio is just a few doors down from Tgt11. They just gave me some free little self-adhesive rubber feet

Both second-hand jobs!

The guitar is a proper Frankenstein creation that the guy I bought it from put together. The body is a swamp ash Warmoth Jazzmaster, the pick-ups are the J Mascis signature set, and the aluminium neck was made by a German company called Baguley. The latter went under in ignominious circumstances at the end of 2024.

I’ve wanted to try an aluminium neck guitar for years, but they’re so rare it’s hard to find one to try, and the guitars/necks are often so expensive that I’ve not been able to justify taking a punt on one. The guy selling it wanted it gone, and so I managed to negotiate this for less than I’ve seen the necks selling for by themselves, so I decided to take a punt.

The build quality is definitely a bit rough around the edges, being a home-brew project, but thankfully it’s actually really great to play. The neck does feel quite different to a traditional wood, obviously, - it’s cold to the touch and it’s thinner than your standard c-neck for sure - but it’s surprisingly comfortable, and the sustain is definitely stronger than a wood-neck! Somehow it’s even very well balanced and doesn’t neck-dive on the strap, which I totally expected it to do.

On the amp, I think Matamps are pretty synonymous with doom and stuff these days because of bands like Sleep and Electric Wizard using their stupidly loud zillion-watt amps, but this is a Minimat, which is 5 watt head with a built-in attenuator in the back and a line-out for recording. Apparently they measure their wattage in terms of ‘clean’ volume though, and everyone was out of the house the other day so I cranked it to see how loud it actually was and almost shat myself. Was not expecting it to go as loud it as it does! I think this is a V2 so is maybe about 10-15 years old. The last run was maybe V3? They only seem to do them every few years or so.

The Elac branding/design is unique as far as I’m aware. The cab is a 4x10 with four Elac 10N/86 alnico speakers, which are originals from c1964, and were probably salvaged from a Vox cab before Vox switched over to Celestions, judging by what I’ve been able to find out from Google. Fair to say they’re well broken in! I guess the Matamp guys were either commissioned to do it or just thought it would be cool, having gotten hold of the speakers somehow. I should drop them a line about it as I can’t find anything online, and the guy I bought it from wasn’t the original owner so wasn’t sure what the exact history behind it was.

Anyway, it sounds absolutely ace! Really nice cleans, takes pedals well and all that but crank the gain and boost and it’s a riff-monster, even at very low bedroom volumes!

Really pleased with them both.

Woah. Seems like a combination for life! Was thinking about ditching the Kemper set-up, and this hasn’t helped.

Thanks so much for the deep-dive details! Love it.

Alright

First impressions

yesterday I noodled with it for an hour or so. Just the Strat straight into the Chroma Console, into the soundcard. I’ve got to say that it was a little confusing for 10 minutes, then I figured it out and went through all the sounds and combos and I was feeling a bit underwhelmed when I went home. It all sounds a little bit digital compared to the spring verb and tape of the RE-501

Had about 45 minutes with it this morning. Decided to go Strat → RE-501 → Chroma Console and it sounds fucking sublime now. Dreamy as fuck. Really takes that analog in and gives it some twist and sparkle :star_struck:

Double thumbs up
