Gear Wanker thread Mk III

I’ve got a H5 for field recording, no real complaints other than the rubberised coating getting a bit sticky and having to be removed.

I’m pretty decent at woodwork but very conscious that this isn’t my guitar. Going to buy some brand new and very sharp chisels and go carefully.

I’ve got the previous generation of h4 and it’s a gear of all time imho.

We use those things for rehearsal recording all the time; they’re great. Possibly overkill though? Might be cheaper to buy an old laptop specifically for the job and put Reaper on it. I have absolutely ancient laptops that I use for multitrack drum recording in Reaper, so I would imagine that you could record a stereo track on virtually any laptop…

I’ve used a Zoom H2n (a bit smaller and cheaper than than the 4 and 5) for exactly this use case for many years, no problem.

I bought an amp

It sounds incredible

And is in amazing condition for its vintage. It’s a 1978, same as the Sabre

Innit

It fully sounds like Crosseyed & Painless, Rome 1980

It was less than £500 too

Nice!

Wasn’t it MM who made amps that had tranny preamps and tube power amps? I always enjoyed the perversity of that.

Yep

But just dicking around with it & it has some interesting consequences. If I put the volume way up & the master way down with the reverb & tremolo on then the signal overloads so nicely at the front end that it squashes out the verb & trem so that the front of the note is raspy and dry & then the trem & verb fade in beautifully on the sustain

pretty exhausted from looking into different hardware samplers & etc. destroying me via my ADHD & etc.

I think what’s most annoying is that it seems like a few decent midi controllers and a DAW should be able to do everything you can do with all the different grooveboxes/workstations/whatever

looking into all the Elektron boxes has done a particular number on me, what with all the jargon and the people saying that one or another is/was fundamental to this or that music for whatever arcane + exceptionalist reasons

+1 for Koala. So handy. I run it off my phone playing loops of wind samples for texture during gigs.

I’ve always wanted to sample my own fart noises. How does it go down at a gig?

Elektron have been bought by a venture capital company - can’t be good news :disappointed:

This is maybe not helpful advice - but I like the idea that the best thing to make something with is whatever you have to hand - and that creating from messing around with or stretching the functionality of what you have - is often more creative than getting and using the ‘dream’ tailored set-up
