sounds wretched. kirby’s picture’s have life, character and humour I think, things that are appropriate for the books. then again, I;m not really into that modern design ideal in most instances, I think it’s way overused and slapping it on everything has a flattening effect - and who wants to conform to some tedious notions of ‘good taste’ or ‘principles of good design’ or whatever else anyway??

not really going to argue with this, fair enough. read them when I was like 13 so maybe I should be ignored

getting proper nostalgic for the old Discworld game graphics now

That game completely defeated me.

Proper mad memories of them, like really potent nostalgia

SCUMM engine stuff was so much fun. But yeah, when you just couldn’t get past one bit it was the most frustrating thing ever.

Half way through Kav and Clay.

That top books of the 21st century thread came in handy to me :grinning:

You like so far?

A friend gave me a copy, when I hadn’t even heard of it. So was very happy.

Yes it’s excellent. Really enjoying it.
My missus can’t get into it though

Think this’ll be my annual Christmas massive novel this year

I’m about fifty pages from the end! Great book but bloody long though. Going to be in the market for a slim novella afterwards.

I should’ve gone for a shorter one after black leopard red wolf but I didn’t check how big it was on the kindle before I started it

Yeah. It is like many of my favourite books. Really get why people wouldn’t like it.

My Sister the Serial Killer did this for me.

Downloaded this morning as the other one I’m reading is a bit dry and I had amazon vouchers to burn. Looking forward to getting stuck in!

So after seeing so many positive things about it on here and the ‘best books’ polling thread I have finally finished ‘The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay’.

Just on the off chance that anyone cares, here is my **** Goodreads review:

This is a brilliant book with two superb sequences in it that are right up there with some of the best writing that I’ve ever read (interestingly, although the vast majority of the book is set in New York, the story really shines when it leaves NY).

Prevented from giving it five stars for two really major flaws (which would be enough to scupper any other book that didn’t have so much else to recommend it):

  1. It’s 600 pages long and it really doesn’t feel like it needs to be. The story could easily be told in half that length but it’s interspersed with a LOT of comic book industry navel gazing which might appeal to some but I didn’t enjoy much.

  2. There is a grand total of 1 main female character and, with one brief exception, she’s defined almost entirely by her role as lover and mother. She’s introduced with a description of her naked bottom. It’s a book set in the first half of the 20th century in a male dominated world but even so… this felt jarring and annoying to read in 2019.

Re point 1. Don’t think the comic book style adventure bits would work anywhere near as well without the slower bits.

Re point 2. Think that’s harsh. None of the other characters except the main two are fleshed out at all. Everyone is a comic book style bit part character outside kav and clay.

I am also about halfway through Kav & Clay and am finding it to be an absolute joy.

Fair enough, just how I felt :man_shrugging:

finished my re-read of Pratchett and I have a list of books I’ve been wanting to read but I just can’t work myself up to something new.
emot-effort
Instead, I am re-reading the works of A. Lee Martinez, whose stories always have some gros bit with snot but are otherwise very enjoyable.

Started reading an old compilation of ghost stories I found at work (not in a spooky, mysterious way; the library were giving them away) and have been quite enjoying them. I didn’t love the Wilkie Collins one last night but the other two were good.

I’m using ghost stories as a break from reading a companion book to The Wire. The episode guides aren’t that good but interviews and essays from some of the writers/ producers are really interesting.
