The Book Hive are doing free P&P and also some curated stuff/lucky dip: https://www.thebookhive.co.uk/important-announcement-covid-19/.

It may have been asked before (sorry, I haven’t read the thread) but can someone recommend any ‘essential’ fantasy works?

It’s not a genre that I’d really explored before - but I recently read all of the Earthsea novels, and now I’m keen to get stuck into some other stuff.

There’s a few recommendations here:

Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe is essential fantasy imho!

Brick Lane Books and Burley Fisher Books are doing deliveries. Ordered from Brick Lane the other day and my order arrived just a few days later.

Yep, this looks good. Assuming that it’s what is now part of a book titled Book of the New Sun Vol 1, that is?

Yup, certainly is! I’d read the whole thing myself!

think the easiest way to get them is with parts 1+2 together and 3+4

this does not clarify things does it?

Just finished The City & The City, and didn’t think it was particularly great. Should I try anything else by Mieville?

I think it’s pretty much a perfect book and one of my all time favs. Given that my thoughts might not be that useful but still - I really enjoyed Embassytown earlier this year (sci fi philosophy language stuff), whereas Unlondon was a decent romp but a bit too YA

I was expecting to be exactly my sort of thing too. Thought the prose was functional at best, no real character development and barely any attempt at world building other than continuously labouring this novel concept of the two cities, which became really, really tedious after a while. There didn’t really seem like there was any hidden complexity or ambiguity to ponder, perhaps I am missing something completely.

What almanacs or annuals should I buy

Beano.

For me it was just a modern, sci fi twist on a classic noir detective thing - twisty plot, nefarious criminals, hardened anti hero etc. And for me, on that front, it was a total success

Is this commercially available yet

only on the dark web

Recommendations please!

I have recently got into trees which is odd because I haven’t paid them any mind for 42 years up to this point. I think it must be all this State Mandated Exercise walking about I’m doing.

I would like cool non fiction books about how awesome trees are please.

Thank you
