I’m never quite sure if it was ‘popular culture’ (more so music) that stalled 20 years ago or I did. It appears to me that there aren’t the very specific cultures/movements in the music charts like there were when I was growing up. I was born in 1967 and got into music at a fairly early age so had first-hand experience of glam, heavy metal, punk, new romantic, techno, house, rap, grunge, brit-pop etc. Just doesn’t seem to be the genre shifts these days that there were between 1970 and 2000. If anything, the advent of music being ‘on-demand’, the ability to instantly access pretty much any track from any era, has meant that the overriding ‘movement’ of the past 20 years has been nostalgia.
Or, I might just be old and out of touch.
