Gig audit: crowd sizes at the moment

However bad audiences have got, I’m sure it can never be worse than gobbing over people in 1976.

fav trend lately re attendance and gig sizes

bands playing a good sized Glasgow venue (1000-1500) and putting a small Edinburgh gig (200-500) as an add-on either the day before or after

gives two chances to see them, and means I can catch popular bands playing way smaller venues than I’d expect - small capacity Osees earlier this year was a blast

Hadn’t seen many of these, but being able to see Frightened Rabbit play Midnight Organ Fight at the Liquid Room instead of the crappy Glasgow Academy was fantastic.

Self Esteem - Queen’s Hall then Barras
Osees - Old Fruitmarket then Summerhall
Jeff Rosenstock (upcoming) - Mash House then QMU
Mary Wallopers (upcoming) - Barras then Liquid Room

the examples that brought it to mind for me, enough to make me happy anyway!

So annoyed I missed out on Mary Wallopers tickets, I’m usually so good at getting tickets before they sell out!

Jeff has sold out now too before I got a ticket - I’ve been getting better but still didn’t think I had to plan 3 months ahead for a DIY punk gig!

Indeed I still use Facebook because its the only integrated option that actually has good coverage for events. But a lot of places including venues dont use it anymore and its all on a insta story, often with the location not clear, and no integrated calendar options so you end up going back to pen and paper…

Facebook has also stopped remining you of events that you have listed as ‘going’ on which is beyond annoying. The notifications are filled with spam and the actual useful old notifications for birthday and events has essentially been massively nerfed.

I advise you look abroad for festivals. Many great festivals in europe priced extremally reasonably. 100-200 pounds range. The acts are not a step down and the camping pass is going to be and extra 20 quid. Plane tickets are still cheap even if they are raising. I go to Off in Katowice every year and its still only about 120 pounds including camping + transport costs. The beers are 3 pounds as well and there is two cheap international airports about an hour away.

Update on this: Things seem to be more normal again, Ticketswap options are again feasible with most artists (again purely anecdotal experience).

I dont know if this is real or psychological but I have definitely been getting more annoyed at people at concerts. I dont know if this is because im older, more sober, and more cranky, or if there has been a change in behavior.

This is the absolute norm in electronic music circles. You would put the biggest acts fairly early. But then again there is an expectation that it will go all night so its a bit different.

Why not both.gif
