  • Give a straight answer one way or the other
  • Feel obliged to do a god awful Marlon Brando impersonation.

Both, I’d say yes doing a voice, illustrating how foolhardy a decision the parents had made in the first place.

A bit weird. All family are normally at a Christening, no? I’ve been to my 1st cousin once removed’s Christening.

It was the church. My 2 older kids got christened at a more “normal” CofE church and it wasn’t an issue in the slightest

Can someone explain to me what the point of having Godparents in this day and age is?

I should add that he wasn’t saying I couldn’t come at all - he just didn’t want me standing at the font when they did the water splashing etc

They are basically volunteering to look after the kid, or at least help work out what will happen to the kid if both parents were to die

That’s always been my understanding of it anyway

That and a tenner in the post at christmas and birthdays

In being baptised do you have to appoint a Godparent? Like getting a marriage witnessed etc.?

Does this arrangement actually have any sort of practical/legal standing or is it just like an informal agreement?

I have four but I’ve only met two of them.

Godmother A - brilliant woman, was my sister’s Brownie leader, adopted two kids who lived next door after their parents died
Godmother B - never met her, used to send me cheques on my birthday but my parents never cashed them as they were made out in Irish punts
Godfather A - good guy, loaded, has about 15 other godchildren but still gets me a birthday present if I see him
Godfather B - never met him, gave my parents a fat gold necklace to keep safe for me and I cashed it a few years ago to help pay for my MA

my Godfather was pretty terrifying. Remember him trying to roll up a fag while using his knees to hold the wheel steady on the motorway. A big alcoholic, was highly intelligent Maths genius but pissed it up the wall. Gave me about £400 when I did well in my GCSEs. Haven’t seen him in about 10 years

My godparents are my mum’s best friend from growing up and her husband, and my dad’s best friend growing up and his wife. They’re old family friends and very nice. My brothers got various aunts and uncles as godparents.

Haven’t thought about christening / naming ceremony for my daughter, and no plans for it or godparents. Is there a Jewish equivalent?
