Good cheapish eats in Rome and Florence?

Anybody have any tips? Would be lovely, thanks. X

In Rome a place called Pizzeria Ostiense

Trattoria Vecchia Roma is mid-range price wise I’d say but one of the best meals I’ve ever had (prepare to queue though, they definitively prioritise locals which is quite funny tbf)

Florence - All’Antico Vinaio

Focaccia style sandwiches stacked with meats, cheeses and other delicious stuff. Pretty sure they start at about €5. Pretty sure my total came to €10 with a beer.

It gets ridiculously busy at peak eating times though, so try to go between lunch and dinner. Worth queuing for.

We tried to get in there 2 or 3 times but could never get a table

We went here instead because the internet told me it served francesco Tottis favourite carbonara

Was very nice, not massively cheap but not expensive

Thanks so very much all! Super helpful stuff!

We had to queue for well over an hour tbf. Built some good queue rapport with some other tourists as locals were just waved straight in but it was very, very good food tbf

Thanks again all!

Aw YES!

I’m happy for you and also very jealous (and now very hungry)

Sadly not me, but the rest of my gang, so I share your envy

Absolutely impenetrable at this time of year, you either need to be prepared to wait over an hour or conduct a military operation to get there in the five min window per day when there are fewer than 40 people queuing.

Vivoli is similar, but the affogato and gelato is beautiful. We had lunch next door in Trattoria Pallotino while we waited expecting it to be a mid tourist trap place, but it was actually the best meal I had all trip!

Babae in San Spirito is also really really good, and is one of the more varied menus I saw. Got the meatballs with spinach, hummus, roast potatoes and cheese on toast which sounds terrible but it was gorgeous! Plus if you saw Stanley Tucci’s Florence episode that’s where he gets wine out of the hole in the wall

You can’t go wrong with Mercato centralę, so many good options.

Lastly, if you take a day trip out to Siena (highly recommended, it’s amazing) we ate at La Taverna di San Guiseppe which was good - although not mind blowing. I also had an affogato the size of my head in a cafe on the palazzo.

(This is a general ‘you’ btw, I know you’ve already been OP!)
