You really don’t Bam. You can absolutely choose not to do this. x

would you be a millionaire?

Is that a goal of mine? No.

Would I actively work to avoid it happening? No.

Would I consider dramatically increasing my level of charitable giving and or activism if I ended up in such a position? Yes.

what would you give you the right to that outsized influence on which charities to give to etc?

Nothing.

so people shouldn’t aspire to be, glorify or excuse people with outsized importance

like someone like Michael Stipe as stated say, he has made good music? Most can probably agree

So what, so have I and the people on Disintegrated State.

You might say his music is better or more important with more reach? That’s debatable but ok

Can’t really say that Michael Stipe has made music that is 100,000 to a MILLION times better than the music we make here and so deserves that kind of return.

@Bamnan has a very strange stance in this thread, and I think I need to opt out before I get overly irked.

It’s Thursday, I’m trying to breeze through it.

That’s a big statement Bam.

Outsized influence is not a good thing in general. However, it’s also a fact of our society. If we reject it on principle and expect those with similar views to ours to do the same then we’ll never progress to a more equal society - those who believe in equality that have the potential to influence will be allowing those who don’t believe in those ideals all the power to further neoliberal capitalism.

What I believe we should be doing is striving to work within the current system to ensure that people use their influence responsibility, to break down barriers, to - for example - advocate for equal pay, more stability in the welfare system and use their capital wisely. We should be looking to spread the influence of our principles far wider so we can begin to convince wider society of some of the things we discuss.

Haven’t heard one note of anything from Disintegrated State but I can confidently state that Stipe has made music that is 100,000 time better.

if people were truly equal they would hopefully not see their interests at odds with their fellow humans, no reason to believe that the rich and generous have equality in mind in fact I can’t see how that could be the case because they are acting in direct opposition to it
