Got my new bank card through the post today

Tried using my work pass on the card machine in the staff shop recently.

I sometimes try to use my work pass to enter my block of flats.

sometimes click my car keys at my front door

I’ve put my keys through the letterbox instead of unlocking the door on a couple of occasions.

• Contactless payments are safe and highly secure. They have the same
protection as chip & PIN payments, making them safer than cash. For added
protection from fraud, if you are paying by card you will occasionally be
asked to insert the card and enter your PIN. If your card or device is lost or
stolen, so long as you report it to your bank as soon as possible in accordance
with your bank’s terms, you won’t have to pay for any fraudulent use.

OK so it’s the same technology, only different countries seem to have different security policies. Presumably there’s something a bit more secure about inserting the card into the reader. No idea what it is.

don’t really get apple/android pay, how is taking your phone out of your pocket any more convenient than taking a card out

Keep your phone in your hand at all times and reap the rewards.

added bonus of being a showoff, innit

The one time I’ve used it is when I’d forgotten my purse but had my phone with me. Pretty convenient tbh.

Guy in front of me at Sainsburys last week spent about two minutes twatting about with his phone before he could get it to pay for his assortment of vegan nonsense. It’s this decade’s take on the old “my massive purse is buried deep at the bottom of my massive handbag” schtick.

don’t have to take your wallet out with you i guess?

there’s often no limit (2 unlimited etc) unlike contactless’s £30

have you regularly stopped carrying your wallet because of having that feature though? have loads of other useful things in my wallet

didn’t know this. does it depend on the bank’s policy?

nah i’ve never used any phone-pay thing before, just guess that’s the theory behind it

Contactless and Chip and PIN use the same technIcal standard - EMV (Europay Mastercard Visa)

This is my 2nd boring post of the day

So why do you have to put the card in the reader over £30?

Standard agreed by banks to limit fraud.
Was £10 initially. Then raised to £30 recently.

But why does the card have to be inserted in the machine, rather than read contactlessly with a PIN entry afterwards?
