Great biopic films

what are they?

Just posted that the main weakness of Oppenheimer was imho that it was a biopic, and they usually don’t land much for me - too many IRL limitations to allow them to flex their cinematic muscle

but which ones do really work or standout, as films beyond just the fame/importance of the character they’re discussing

I’m Not There is the only one that jumps straight to mind for me, since it fucked around so much with perception and presentation and “the truth” - but then is it even still a biopic by that point tbh

Ed Wood manages the rare feet of being a good biopic and a Tim Burton film.

The problem with Walk the Line is that it’s no Walk Hard.

Two really great central performances iirc

For them to be good they need to be structured interestingly around key moments rather than trying to do cradle-to-grave. The Danny Boyle directed Steve Jobs one is the best version of a biopic there has been from that perspective IMO.

why has the guy out of OK Go made a biopic about the people who made Beanie babies

oh yeah great shout, that must be up there in the “film that most surpassed my expectations and made me have a lovely time at the cinema” stakes

Films that depict real people and real events that clearly centre the one most famous person such as The Social Network

Yes, Steve Jobs is an excellent example. Cradle to grave biopics are generally so dull.

I also like Chopper and I, Tonya.

Oh, and Tàr of course

(First Man is the film that had the single biggest emotional impact on me of any that I’ve seen and I will never know if that is down to the quality of the film or just where my head was when I watched it and I will never find out so that I keep that memory and impression of it intact)
