There seems to be a lot more on wednesday this year
My initial shortlist. Can’t make Wednesday, not seeing much on Saturday. Looking forward to some free/alt escape gigs being announced.
Thu: Say Sue Me, Folk Bitch Trio, Truck Violence, Brògeal, Angry Blackmen, Search Results
Fri: Róis, Greg Freeman, Pan Amsterdam, Courting, Ellie O’Neill, Maruja
Sat: Eggy, Ava Rasti, Divide + Dissolve
Just found your alt-escape roundup page again, @rob.orch - will need to dedicate some time to go through that, but thanks in advance!
I’ve listened to/rated/planned the artists from the main TGE/Alt-Escape listings as of a few weeks ago, but not checked to see whether any new additions have been added yet. Still need to decide upon a few clashes. Not enough for me to travel down on the Wednesday night for, but am disappointed to be missing Junior Brother.
My recommendations, in rough timetable order:
Thursday:
Sorry Girls (on Sean Nicholas Savage’s label, very lofi bedroom pop)
Kabeaushe (too many sounds to describe. sounds like he’ll be fun to see live)
Clara Kimera (alt-electro-laid-back-pop)
Hachiku (lofi indie pop)
Joshua Idehen (really love his Your Mum Does The Washing song)
The Orchestra(For Now) (BC,NR type vibes. sound like they’d be good live)
Bishopskin (10’ish piece ramshackley band. Excellent live band)
PEM (sweet alt-country dreamy folk)
Friday:
Verde Prato (nice delicate dreamy sounds)
Chloe’s Clue (Spanish alt-pop)
Rich Aucoin (saw him a couple of times at a previous TGE. Glad he’s visiting again from Canada. Super Dan Deacon type party vibes)
The New Eves (think they’re a Brighton band, not seen them before)
Quiet Light (alt-folk pop)
Ideal Living (deep voiced indie pop?)
Ray Silvers (I really liked her one song on spotify, but then it got removed. must check again)
Zimmer90 (fun German duo, upbeat indiepop singalongs)
Saturday:
Hachiku (maybe seeing them here instead of yesterday)
Maddie Ashman (strange cool microtonal guitar playing)
Field Guide (nice indie folk)
Kabeaushe/Rich Aucoin again maybe
Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys (German alt-pop)
The New Eves are one of the best Brighton bands! They’re playing a bunch of alt escape gigs too if you’ve got a clash
Also Brighton. Billy is an incredible front man. I don’t know about indie pop. Vocally, his PR makes Tom Waits comparisons, but lyrically I’d say they were more Arab Strap, and I know that he’s a huge joy division fan (the band is named after their first EP An Ideal For Living)
if you like the sound of Ideal living, you should also seek out Fliptop Head over the weekend
Yeah, I didn’t think indiepop was the correct word - I was just too lazy to go back to listen to remind myself what they sounded like! I’ve been enjoying their EP though.
I don’t think Fliptop Head are on my bands I’ve listened to/rated yet, so will check out, thanks!
I really miss going to great escape. Next year hopefully
The Alternative Escape has some good things on the Friday.
Pale Blue Eyes and girlpuppy are on at Shipwright’s Yard then girlpuppy is playing again at the Mucky Duck.
I saw Pale Blue Eyes recently and they were superb.
Has anyone spotted a list of free stuff going on please?
Spotted? Compiled it myself!
The official app has the Alternative Escape listings and times.
Amazing, thanks both
This one’s not on your list as far as I can see:

A huge thank you for doing this every year – it’s incredibly helpful (although being a social media refuseniks I had to borrow a phone to access any of the info).
Having done another evening of research I’m adding Smag På Dig Selv, Tyler Ballgame, Bucket, Ruby Gill, Truthpaste and Fliptop Head to my list. And I left out Nap Eyes in my last post – a great band and a must-see for me.
fair point. It’s a challenge though - the more information I add into what I put up, the more there is to be out of date, so I’d rather add links (some of which I have already updated)
Wasn’t at all intended as a criticism, by the way, or a request that you type out all the info on the blog. Your blog is massively helpful and hugely appreciated – I wouldn’t have found a fraction of the alt escape stuff without it!
Ok, about to leave home to make our way to Brighton. I’ve got my plans all mostly sorted, subject to change/last minute decisions/early bed times overruling band performances.
Saw so many excellent sets – really well organised festival, every band seemed to start right on time, barely any queues. Far more pleasant than last year, with the Gaza boycott hanging over everything. Just wish there was a bit more quality on the Saturday.
Highlights: Truck Violence, Tyler Ballgame, Nap Eyes, Say Sue Me, Bria Salmena, Bucket, Folk Bitch Trio, RÓIS, Pan Amsterdam, Maruja, Tara Nome Doyle
