I actually posted the Reddit link but oddly it’s just scraped the picture and killed the link back.

Anyway it tells the back story

Glenn Murtha and his brother jump from an abandoned house’s second-storey window. The boy with the ventriloquist’s dummy is another brother and the picture was taken by sister Tish Murtha. (More pics and info in the link.)

Their father had his own scrap business, so they didn’t just use the houses for fun but would scavenge items to sell in the scrapyard or use the timber to make fires.

Also he says he was 17 and he looks about 12 so maybe it’s not really kids at all?

Tish Murtha had an extensive exhibition of her work at the Photographers Gallery last year.

After studying photography in Newport she returned to the North East to document the social deprivation and instability in Britain. The kids jumping out of the window is from the Elswick Kids series she took immediately after completing her studies. Throughout her career she particularly focused on youth unemployment. Her pictures were so stark that it eventually was raised as a subject for debate in the House of Commons, in 1981.
