Nice list. It would be interesting to see what kept some of these off the top spot, I remember Wonderwall was up against Robson and Jerome which was a epic a battle as Blurâs Country House it turned out.
You can find quite a few hours somehow disappearing down a rabbit hole with this site, but it will give you the answers (youâre right about Robson and Jerome beating Wonderwall)
Just listened to the Rod Stewart song on that list. Fair play to him - Given the era, and hearing how direct the lyric is about the subjectâs sexuality, thatâs quite a remarkable thing to get to number 2.
The Killing of Georgie â a rare self-penned Rod Stewart hit â is a remarkable single, particularly for 1976: a tender paean to a gay friend that turns into an unflinching depiction of his homophobic murder, then transforms itself into a lengthy, heartbroken coda (its melody pinched â as John Lennon noted â from the Beatlesâ Donât Let Me Down).
Think it was on âLovers Rockâ.
Such a masterpiece of a song. Been on solid repeat since reading this list.
Thanks again for posting it!
Yep, along with the equally amazing Kunte Kinte by The Revloutionaries. Great film, great songs.
