‘I don’t like them, but I still go and eat everything.’ Uh huh

Fully expect this to turn up in the right wing press this morning. Couldn’t be less shocked about that story if I’m honest.

Behind every brand and media outlet issuing noble, black backgrounded statements last week there will be many stories like this, probably much worse.

The headline writers have been having a mare for weeks.

Yeah just saw this and couldn’t believe it, absolute farce.

Without reading it, this doesn’t surprise me; the Guardian’s UK editorial team have a real problem with how they approach anything to do with Trans people.

Hopefully the US and Aussie staffers stand up against this bollocks the way they have in the past.

Rowling digging that hole for herself so deep that she must be passed the Earth’s core by now.

What boggles my mind is how the only part of the Guardian I consume any more, namely Football Weekly, is trying to be more progressive. It’s had more women on, more BAME panellists, one of their regular panellists is trans, they’ve done multiple specials on racism in football, ethics in football comes up all the time and they all seem pretty left wing.

Then I look at all the bullshit coming out of the rest of the paper and how Freeman is still writing for them and I just end up with my head in my hands. Just fucking unbelievable.

Football weekly has been excellent.

As my Dad always says sports always see themselves separate from the paper they write for and that’s becoming more pronounced particularly on Football Weely and Fiver e-mails. There have been a few veiled comments about “Big Paper” recently which suggests they are just as sick of the main lot as the rest of us.

If you read Private Eye & to a lesser extent Popbitch a lot of the opinion piece writers at The Guardian (I’ve forgotten the correct bloody term for them is it commentators) seem like pretty terrible people.

Trying to work out when it tipped from us jokingly pointing out how ‘Guardian’ something on there was to us angrily pointing out how ‘Guardian’ everything on there was.

Like I’m sure 5 years ago it was the occasional piece of utter shit they’d push out but now. Wow.

Probably when 2 things happened:

  1. The reigonal papers being sold to The Mirror Group as it was in 2010/11

  2. When Brooker left/John Harris started writing opinion pieces every fucking day.

The 1st one for sure had a detrimental effect on the paper.

The reigonal papers being sold to The Mirror Group

This either passed me by or was long enough ago I don’t remember. Do you mean the Graun used to actually do regional variation editions and stopped, selling the newsrooms to Mirror Group…who then did what with them?

One word: Jeremy Corbyn.

Completely tipped most of their columnists over the edge.

(That’s two words, but yeah good point.)

It didn’t pass me by fucking pain in the arse for months it’s a partially long story and I can’t be arsed typing it on a phone but:

GMG used to own the Manchester Evening News which was the big one loads of smaller local papers such as the Rochdale Observer & Oldham Advertiser and a group of papers in Reading which I can’t for the life of me remember the name of.

GMG were burning through cash at the time and put the reigonal arm up for sale. The Mirror Group which had already started buying up reigonal papers bought the GMG papers and that is why all the reigonal papers are now all the same (under the rebranded name Reach, what a waste of fucking money that name change was) and GMG absolutely spaffed the money away on utter nonsense with the level of journalism going down the toilet.

Ah right. I knew Guardian started in Manchester but I didn’t realise the MEN had been run by them too.

I mean local newspapers going to the dogs seems to be just a general thing over the last 20-30 years too :frowning: fucked.

These are reigonal papers Reach own completely different kettle of fish and most of them are trading off really old names that used to be trusted reigonal papers MEN, Liverpool Echo, Nottingham Post etc.

Local, local papers absolutely they fell through the floor but, they were the most important ones because the news people want the most is local news (those local fb groups your parents are on with the local racists kind of bear that out).

Kind of wish I had more to say on the journalistic quality of local papers but the websites absolutely decimate any computer I try to open them with and it ends up taking upwards of an hour to answer a questionnaire about which item of confectionery I’ve heard of
