Just seen the trailer for this on the cinema screen and I implore you all to go see it in a cinema if at all possible! It’s in select theatres from 24th Oct and otherwise straight to Netflix on 7th Nov.
I managed to convince the movie people (by nagging relentlessly) to let me screen it in my little small-town cinema and I’m so excited for it. As someone who has suffered through the source material, it looks to me like del Toro has managed to achieve just about the right amount of dramatic ~flair~ especially with Oscar Isaac as Dr Frankenstein. Visually very del Toro-y and will be so worth going to the cinema for if you have the option at all.
I will probably watch it at some point. I’m not sure when exactly but a long time ago GDT went, for me, from being the Geek Director Who Will Deliver to… something much less than that. It was partially being moderately disappointed with Crimson Peak.
Listening to a podcast the other day and one of the presenters or guests had seen it at an early screening and said it was “fine” and they felt the issue was that he’s always wanted to make Frankenstein, so has been putting elements of it into his other movies, so now he’s finally got to do it, it feels somewhat empty. I must admit, I felt something akin to that watching the trailer - looks nice, feels empty.
I’ll likely see this at the cinema but, as with Nosferatu (which I saw twice at the cinema!) it really is not my cup of tea so let’s see how I get on with it
Yeah this sums up my feelings about that film as well. Can’t for the life of me remember what it was ABOUT. I do think this one looks pretty good though, and that Oscar Isaac is probably the right amount of drama queen to pull off Dr Frankenstein.
