Right…
I’ve been a fairly terrible guitar player for many years with practice and commitment fading in and out over that period. I know the basic shapes and can strum the odd tune, but always struggled with practicing alone. I’m coming back from a fairly long lay off of around ten years (guitars were in storage during house renovations) and I’m kind of struggling with what I do and I don’t know. To throw something new into the mix, my ten year old grandaughter has started to learn, and she’s very keen to play with me. I think that would be great. I have a birthday next week and Mrs Pete has suggested having some lessons which I generally think is a good idea. I can’t use my grandaughters tutor as I live on the other side of London, and I’m unsure of how I go about things. Do I say to the tutor I need to start from scratch, are there tutors who teach people who don’t really know what they’re doing right or wrong?
TBH I would maybe just start with tab of your favourite songs and try playing along to them. That will probably give you a sense of what you’re not great at. Then you can maybe just start with some guitar technique tuition videos?
Edit but I kind of think messing around with mates in a rehearsal room is best, assuming you have at least one drummer in your mate group?
My advice would be to have at least a few lessons with someone in person. They’ll quickly be able to tell you where you’re at with most things, and can work with you accordingly.
Going straight to tabs or noodling with mates will just mean you never unlearn bad habits or poor technique, and you’ll quickly get frustrated.
I’d also say it’s important and good that your granddaughter is learning properly from someone in person, and if she has any questions it’d be great for you be able to answer and help with sound advice.
Get the basics down with a tutor, then you can make the choice to carry on or work by yourself, but learning the correct hand positions etc early on will stand you in good stead.
Not sure which bit of London you live in, but I believe (could be wrong) Jon Richards (ex Joeyfat and Unhome) gives lessons which might be interesting! Not sure which bit he lives in either tbf.
Wow, imagine being able to play like the dude from Joeyfat! ![]()
He’d undoubtedly get pissed off with me pointing at my Joeyfat albums while excitingly shouting “teach me this one”.
Thanks for the excellent reply’s, I appreciate them.
I’ve found someone near who I’m thinking I’ll probably give a go. Mrs Pete and my kids are giving me a hard time with regards to birthday gifts, so I’ll either book one lesson or maybe a block booking.
