Did you ever have to do quantum stuff in you chemistry course? (I know itā€™s physics but a friend had to do some, including Schrodingerā€™s equation and hated it.

Kind of, I guess.

When I was made redundant the only available jobs in the sector were for running large high-end residential projects. Weā€™re talking Ā£50m+ projects. I applied for loads and got polite rejections from a couple and silence from the rest.

Technically I was qualified enough, but I wasnā€™t experienced in the sector at all, and was way too junior to be running jobs of that kind of size.

Not really much of an anecdote, Iā€™m afraid.

I did introductory stuff, but ran screaming from the more hardcore mathsy stuff. Thankfully my course was modular, so I had the option to do more synthetic chemistry and biological stuff instead.

One of my final exams was a ā€œgeneral studiesā€ thing with questions taken from all of the modules though (obvs it was an ā€œanswer three of these sevenā€ type exam) and it was eye-opening to see some of those questions and how far outside my knowledge they were.

The first question was ā€œEinsteinā€™s special theory of relativity predicts a maximum atomic number for the periodic table. Why? (20 marks)ā€, to which my only answer was ā€œhaha whatā€

I was working as a marketing temp at a company ages ago (first job out of uni) - there was a mixup at my recruitment agent and they put me forward for a marketing manager position somewhere else in the company. Somehow nobody really noticed until I actually got into the interview that I was wildly underqualified for the job. It was a really embarrassing and slightly spirit-crushing interview which resulted in a pretty rapid rejection.

No. I was doing healthcare, education, social housing and transport stuff and I still think those sectors are shedding jobs.

Oh, I also recently got headhunted for head of department at a pharma company. Iā€™m about 15 years of experience short of being qualified for something like that.

Recruitment agencies, eh? Bless their cotton socks.

Back when the market was good, I used to get calls from recruiters apparently headhunting me, despite never signing up with any agencies.

None of the posts were appropriate for my experience at all. One of them was to be my supervisorā€™s boss.

Briefly managed a small cafe when I was between ā€˜careerā€™ jobs in 2013. Was totally unqualified to do so (had worked as a barman for about 6 months prior) but was a piece of pish.

Iā€™ve got a follow-up call with a recruiter this week about a position that I strongly, strongly suspect is with my old bossā€™s biggest client.

Iā€™m not interested in moving at the moment but IMAGINE THE BANTS!

Applied to be a waitress in a cafe when I was in my final year of sixth form and they offered me a job in the kitchen instead. Iā€™d never had a job before and couldnā€™t even make an omelette but they had too many front-of-house staff and not enough back-of-house. Worked in kitchens part-time for the next five years and then full-time for a year and a half so it worked out well.

It was deeply not okay, and stressed me out to the point that I ended up asking to be transferred to being a kitchen porter instead. Running kidsā€™ clubs with no idea of how to save a drowning child? No thanks. Apparently itā€™s common practice at private health clubs where, technically, everything is at your own risk/discretion.

Good thing no one said these anecdotes had to be interesting.

One of my friends decided he wanted to be a project manager, so he just started applying for project manager jobs he was wildly unqualified for and lied on his cv to get an interview. At every interview heā€™d get to a point where he didnā€™t know what to say and mess up, but then afterwards heā€™d find out what he should have said by asking for feedback. Eventually he accrued enough information to know what to say to ace the interview, and he is now a wildly unqualified project manager.
