I’m sure those people would have been awful no matter what the guitar, but I think there is also a particular thing around these styles of guitar, you know how some people get really possessive of their interests and hobbies, like when a band cross over to mainstream success rather than be happy about it they complain that they are losing ‘their’ band and new fans don’t get it, it was kind of like that.
I remember any time a brand would come out with a similar offset style people were worried that this would be the one that would make them become mainstream, so when finally an official affordable version came out it threatened people and they probably felt the need to put them down.
its weird some people acting like they had discovered some hidden gem in a jazzmaster or jaguar, when really they were already iconic guitars of grunge/alternative/indie rock and it was only through some weird conservatism/lack of understanding of the market on fenders part that they hadn’t made them more widely available (like so many people would have wanted a guitar like Kurt Cobain’s, they just weren’t affordable, and then some of the people who did get them thought of it as a sign of their individuality rather than a sign of ability to spend a lot of money on a guitar, and so got really elitist when new models came out). but yeah, guitar snobs are terrible
