I think that’s something a lot of the standout series - Boardwalk, The Wire and Mad Men (not HBO, i know) have all got in common.
The Sopranos not so much. It did dip in quality a bit, but not in the last series.

completely agree - very, very few dramas (or comedies, tbf) don’t outstay their welcome.

I think it’s generally taken to just mean a one-off in these days of wringing every last bit from any half-decent television idea.
What? That’s surprising as they definitely weren’t before.
True Detective S2 is really loads better in episodes 5-8 than in 1-4.
That said I’d only watch a S3 if they somehow managed to bring both series together in some kind of unified notion.
