I’m bored of doing this now.

Enjoyed this one

BOOM, DRONE STRIKE

Not enough to like the original, I note.

From someone called ‘Cold War Steve’ on twitter

Shite

My dad sends me a Cold War Steve once every three weeks or so. He’s absolute catnip for a particular kind of boomer.

I think some Coldwar Steves are quite good, when they’re Phil Mitchell and Kim Jong-Un on a caravan park in Cleethorpes or something, there’s a kind of gentle absurdist humour I like. As he’s gone on it’s all got increasingly topical like the one above and it takes the fun out of it.

I used to make cartoons like this on Paint and take the printouts into school when I was 13. By no coincidence whatsoever, back then I didn’t have any friends.

“You see, the world is made for cars. Let me illustrate how dangerous it is for the humble pedestrian with this nonsense:”

Yeah, there’s absolutely no way I’d be leaving the house in that world

Just reminds me of the Coruscant maps in Jedi Knight II, which means that I wouldn’t set foot out there without at least a flechette launcher and some decent force skill leveling

Has been knocking around for a few years. Pretty heavy-handed, but serves a purpose. I quite like it.

Yeah this one is cool. Cars have basically ruined living in a city imo

This graphic shows how children have lost a lot to cars being the dominant mode of travel:

Imagine how far the great-great-grandparent could have wandered :exploding_head:

While I agree that cars are a massive factor in limiting children’s roaming about, I don’t think they’re the only one. Parents get more paranoid with each generation seemingly regarding what level of independence they think is safe, even in car less areas (we were considered weird for letting our kids play independently in a wood when their peers had to be supervised all the time or indoors). Changing social attitudes, culture of fear generally are also to blame imo.

Yes, I don’t necessarily think allowing a child to walk 6 miles is a good idea  and you are right, cars are not the be all and end all of the discussion, especially regarding parental attitudes.

What I’m complaining about is how roads around me are now completely taken up by parked cars or reckless drivers. My dad grew up near where I live now and it’s sad to see formerly public space of roads be reduced free parking.

Unfortunately public transport in Ireland is a complete joke so there’s really no other way to get around in a reasonable fashion.

Back to satire!!

I really find it dubious that graphic is down to cars at all, really. Like even if the swimming pool backed onto my house I wouldn’t (couldn’t) let my 8 year old daughter go there on her own.

Really it’s just another example of weird old people convinced that there’s too much health & safety and kids aren’t allowed to be kids any more. Mostly it’s that people probably have the luxury of not leaving their kids alone. Certainly my single mum didn’t leave me alone during the holidays when she went to work or to walk to primary school and back because she thought it was good for me to have independence, it was because she had no other option!

(I’d also guess the population differences of 100 years ago and the population demographics post WW2 mean comparisons to 1919 and 1950 are fairly dubious.)

Regarding the image I posted, I’m not saying cars aren’t dangerous but when you choose to illustrate the danger of cars by implying that to put a foot on the road or off a crossing will result in instant death you’re clearly being hyperbolic and your satire fails to really have any strong meaning.

These are all strong points but I still think cars make the modern city worse for nearly everyone, especially children for space to play near their houses. It’s only compounded by the effects of pollution on health as well

Yeah. They’re bad for sure and in all sorts of ways.

Those stats on people who didn’t die thanks to lower pollution during Covid were wild.
