Herb Alpert 🎺

Happy 90th Birthday, Herb! :cake::tada::partying_face::birthday::gift::confetti_ball::balloon:

From a previous post

Was massive at his peak. Eleven top 20 albums in the US (five of them #1s), Twelve charting albums in the UK (four top 10s).

Biggest selling US act in '66 with 13m+ records. Bigger than the Beatles.

Spanish Flea! A UK #3 that everyone alive knows, even if they don’t know they know.

Must be one of the most charity-shopped vinyl artists in existence. There’s been half a dozen of his discs in every one I’ve ever been to.

Here’s another UK #3 (and first US 1, after 20+ other charting singles).

Lovely, lovely stuff.

What better way to celebrate the guy’s 90th birthday than to watch a full Herb Alpert TV special? Cheesy contemporary adverts throughout. Superb baseball section at 39m30s (part of a college sports montage). Nirvana inspiration at 41m30s. Cover of Beach Boys California Girls at 46m30s.

Fast forward to ten years later, and how about this beaut for a comeback? A million-seller. Only him and Barry White have had vocal and instrumental US #1s. Been sampled all over the shop, including by Notorious BIG.

Bonus Taste of Honey (“4DJ…”) on the beach:

Big big philanthropist for loads of really good stuff.

Also an abstract painter and sculpter.

Best name, too.

Fun fact: He’s the ‘A’ in A&M Records. Which he founded in '62, it became the world’s largest indie label within a decade, and he and managed it until '93 (and only stopped cos of the corporate culture that PolyGram introduced after the '89 buyout).

:trumpet: LONG LIVE KING HERB :trumpet:

Let’s get to know the main man a little better…

A dude.

As a (casual) Leyton Orient fan, I’m grateful for the gift of Tijuana Taxi. Thanks Herb

Happy Birthday, Herb! I’m one of the few people to have bought Going Places from a charity shop rather than donate it.

I also nicked this rather saucy number from my Mum

Love a bit of Herb Alpert. There were a whole load of remasters back in the 00s, so I own quite a few of his albums on CD, but there’s still quite a few gaps.

What a legend

Had a full afternoon of Herb top tracks mix.

This was a standout.

Our hero, sliding into his 50s with a still-fresh-today track for Control-era Janet Jackson vox and a fun 80s video as well? Yes, please.
