Just consistently amazes me that there are these people with millions of followers on social media who are only ‘famous’ to the people that follow them and nobody else in the wider world has ever heard of them.

No idea of their names but the TikTok creators I experience through osmosis are

  • Adonis, the diabetic cat
  • The cow hoof vet who trims infected nails
  • The guy with a shaved head who does like a silent global news mime thing, particularly on the ukraine conflict

I’m thinking about this in terms of other people who have totally passed me by (with massive followings), but most of these have crossed over into the mainstream e.g. Logan Paul, Mr Beast (?), Blackpink, BTS.

They’re on another level again with hundreds of millions of followers. There are fucking loads of accounts especially on TikTok with hundreds of thousands/a couple of million followers that make decent money from it but nobody will ever know of.

There’s probably a threshold isn’t there - Julien Baker has 700K+ followers on Instagram and Lucy Dacus has 650K+ but I reckon no more than one person in my 20-person team would have heard of them.

Instagram follower counts are way way lower than TikTok. Some people I see on TikTok have 1m+ but on Instagram it’s in the tens of thousands.

I’ve met Anna Lapwood but didn’t know she was famous on TikTok. So I don’t know what to vote.
