They’re thoughts made corporeal, right? I assume therefore they don’t eat or excrete or shed or whatever.

Can’t recall if daemons attack humans or only each other now and I only read La Belle Sauvage when it came out!

It’s considered a huge taboo for a human to touch another person’s daemon, or for someone else’s daemon to attack a human. I’ll say no more than that.

And yes, you’re right about daemons not needing to eat, drink or excrete. Although they do sleep when their human does.

Yes, there was one bit where I’m thinking, hmm this is a bit Merlin isn’t it, but it passed fairly quickly

I guess one could argue that’s still mental stuff only. Do daemons ever physically interact with the world beyond themselves or people? Ie push open doors?

Oh yes, they do things like that.

For god’s sake theo, of course they do!!

Spoliers for non readers, but when

Lyra and Will have their “moment of experience” and the camera pans away etc etc, don’t their daemons have a bit a romp, playfight with each other kind of thing? So daemons don’t fuck, which makes sense, because what would’ve Mrs Coulter’s monkey and Asriel’s leopard done? In fact don’t they have a moment in the books?

It’s been ages. I’ve never considered them like hyg

I enjoyed that. One or two sections seemed a bit poorly done (introducing the gyptians, Lyra running around Jordan looking for Roger) but they got a lot right. GF is a massive fan and she was delighted.

Watched it now. Wasn’t fussed by the music, thought the casting seemed solid (esp Lyra, Asriel and Coulter) but two main complaints:

  1. Lester Freamon was fucking awful, like amateur Shakespeare production bad. What was he doing. Why did they let him do it.

  2. Where were all the daemons? It should be an absolute basic to get right, if there’s someone on screen, there should be animal somewhere in shot. It was really distracting.

Used to use a program called Daemon Tools to mount ISOs onto a virtual drive for installing.

Felt a bit odd how human the daemons’ voices were, kept looking around for another person and then it was just some ferret. Also that goddamn trailer showing the whole series, already know the plot and it still enraged me. Overall good though!

Even a small fish would be very impractical.

Finally caught up. Thought that was wicked pals, got a bit emotional when John Faa said the lads were gonna sail to London and save the kids. Think the music was good. Title sequence with the slices of different worlds was really cool.

Completely agree that there were not enough daemons, particularly noticed in the Jordan scenes with the professors, and with the kitchen staff. Hope when HBO come on board with production next year they have a bit of extra cash.

Ma Costa’s oldest son’s haircut is shocking.

Proper fanboy stuff at the start with the great flood from Belle Sauvage. Loved it.
