This seems to be an entirely new thing

They’re blending aspects of the second book into this series, but the stuff shown in this episode happened off… page in the books. I doubt it’s gonna lead to a completely new storyline or anything, but I guess since Northern Lights is so Lyra-heavy they wanted a bit of a b or c plot or something to switch it up.

I saw a lot of people asking this question after the first episode and I thought fair enough maybe they didn’t explain it but then I remembered they had that whole scene about the gyptain lad becoming a man because his daemon had stopped changing and settled in the shape of a hawk, WATCH TV BETTER

There was also the conversation between Lyra and her friend about it, too.

TBH I’d just say to @zxcvbnm2 to read the fucking book. Based on what else he likes on here he should enjoy it and it’s a really fast read…

Been dipping in and out. Besides I’ve got you guys to fill in any gaps.

Books are for nerds.

Not really feeling it so far, which is a pity. Really loved the books (not quite so much the third one)!

Just feels a bit slight to me?

Enjoying it so far, although the bit with the journalist was very silly.

JOURNALIST: Hello Lyra I have quite literally just met you and now I have given you a piece of vital plot information at great personal risk.

LYRA: Seems legit, after all, I’ve been able to trust every adult I’ve met so far, so why wouldn’t you - a stranger - be any different.

JOURNALIST: I am dead now.

It’s been well over a decade since I read the books so no idea if that bit’s as slight in the books as it is here, but it was quite jarring. Still, the quicker they smash through the early stuff the quicker we get giant polar bears.

I haven’t read them in 17 years (17 years!). It has made me want to go back and read the books. There are definitely bits Northern Lights that I have completely forgotten I don’t remember the journalist at all. From what I remember it Mrs Coulter got angrier and angrier and then Lyra did a runner

I haven’t seen last night’s episode yet but I read that bit of the book last week, the reporter speaks to Lyra for a bit then Coulter sees her and kicks her out of the party and tells her she’ll never work in this town again.

Reasonable departure from the books I guess is Mrs Coulter telling Lyra that Asriel is her father. Reckon this might be a good choice actually, it always felt like a bit of an exposition dump the Gyptians telling her who both her parents are and their history all in one go.

eh apart from that time he pretended not to know what “that whole trans argument” is about

Still finding this a chore. I’m sure it is much more rewarding if you have read the books, but for someone who hasn’t I think they have crammed into two episodes far too many plot lines and characters. It’s a confusing mess tbqh
