Yeah, Lyra aside, I think the GC casting was as good as it gets (Sam Elliot as Lee Scoresby, how do you improve on that?)

When I read the books as a kid I always imagined Asriel as Revolver Ocelot from Metal Gear Solid :man_shrugging:

I know the film seems to have been much maligned by book fans, but it was a pretty enjoyable romp with (compared to this series) a rich and convincing world of humans and daemons (noting I haven’t read the books Mrs FC has been vocally seething at the two episodes so far).

The daemon count was a bit better last night, but given the scene in the car with the journo, I was pretty surprised to see Lyra chuck pillows at Pantalaimon when he was a butterfly / moth - could have had some pretty serious consequences. I also felt that pulling the story into contemporary England in our world totally dissolved the magic (too early) if that’s what happens in the books.

TBF I can imagine someone being completely out of touch and just getting to understand there was a battle going on once it was in full swing and not understanding why two groups he considered progressive were having and dort of tension

That said, I haven’t seen more than that one Tweet and have zero idea about how much he pays attention to generally so…

I agree on Asriel. Nicole Kidman was fine, but Ruth Wilson gets across a lot in very subtle changes to her expression and has the right balance of false benevolence and evil. That’s acting I s’pose.

Couldn’t have put it better myself.

Shit. Sorry

from what I remember you don’t get the 2 worlds thing until the second book, like its going on, but the reader doesn’t know about it

It’s a shame to blow that door wide open so early in the first series. That (I presume) undoes a lot of the mystery. I feel like they did it just to incorporate some mobile phones for the yoof.

Yeah the Subtle Knife starts in our world with a totally new character and doesn’t intersect with anything in the Northern Lights until a few chapters in

thats what I thought! :slightly_smiling_face::upside_down_face:

I feel like they are rushing all of it too much, but I guess its not been made with me in mind!
Can also appreciate how incredibly difficult it must be to translate to the screen, its not bad, i’m just a bit underwhelmed.
Glad others are enjoying it more

Probably just reflects the wealth of high quality, high production value TV available generally these days tbh. Really looking forward to War Of The Worlds. Also reckon World On Fire has been unfairly overlooked - pretty gripping look at the sides of WW2 that are very rarely covered in WW2 dramas (Polish civilian life, life as a German in Nazi Germany, the plight of persecuted minorities in occupied Europe (and Germany) alongside the Jewish population, etc etc.

Sorry! Will do in future!

Grew up with Oxford as my local town, and always had really specific images of everything about what Lyra’s Oxford was like and the way it was different (tbh more than anything in the book, I just have a feeling about it), and they’ve done it really well.

Think Lyra’s been cast perfectly, and she’s just a reaaally good character, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how it goes. she also looks exactly like someone I know looked when she was that age, which is a little distracting.

Reaaally want to re-read the books now - read the original trilogy as a 13/14 year old (I think?)

What else is a spoiler in this thread going to be?

No one should have to spoil discussion about something that was on yesterday and no one has seen next weeks.

Sorry if I’ve spoiled anything, thought I’d blurred out anything spoiler-y…

That sounds sick

Though tbf, it was already spoiled for me cause my dad’s read the book so I get an entire Wikipedia synopsis everytime the series does something slightly differently
