It often happens with newspaper TV reviews. The Guardian had a habit of getting clueless TV critics to review the first episode in a new series of a programme they’d never seen before, and the review would just complain about there being too many characters and the plot not making sense, and then switch to taking the piss if it was a genre programme.

Game of Thrones, The Wire, Battlestar Galactica etc, were all victims.

Finally watched the first ep of series 2, have to say I wasn’t feeling it.

  • Cittagaze didn’t feel right, my impression of it is a mid-century, mid-European faded glory seaside town where every world washes up, not some spectacular Michael’s Mount thing. It’s meant to have casinos and grand palais and stuff.
  • Why did they give the witch that superhero bit? Wouldn’t she just kill Mrs Coulter if she’s happy stabbing up Magisterium folk?
  • What was with the body horror bin of the pine fronds in the witches skin? What a bizarre and horrible thing to invent.
  • Kids were fine, though Will seems a bit soft compared to the books
  • Thought it missed the impact of Lyra asking the alethiometer about Will and it saying “He’s a murderer” and her being pleased with it.

Big fan of the main theme btw. Some strong chords going on.

I love the title sequence in general actually, until that logo appears. Nice idea, hate the font.

Is there anybody who won’t be in this. This week:

Paddy Maguire from Shameless proper blast from the past

This looks like something that would’ve been on cbbc before Newsround

Really like the art deco Catholic-Fascist style they’ve given the Magisterium scenes

The actor who plays the head of the Magisterium is Dafne Keen’s father! Mind blown!

Will and Lyra walk into a cinema screen when the film is already well underway, start chatting about popcorn and then Will pulls his phone out? Scum, subhuman scum. I’d have shopped them in a heartbeat.

The bit where he shot the lad at the observatory had some of this going on.

I think they invented that scene with him and Ruth Wilson just to give him something to do, I’d rather they hadn’t

Do you think HBO forced him on the producers of this to get the funding?

He is very much a musical actor, he is quite clearly very good at what he does it’s just what he does isn’t this.

I actually don’t know who should play Lee Scoresby really there aren’t any western style actors left Timothy Olyphant, maybe?

When I read the books, Lee Scoresby was always Sam Elliott in my head. He may be a bit too old now I suppose, but I reckon he could still pull it off.

I’m a couple of episodes behind, reckon it’s a bit pony tbh. Confused by a lot of the choices. Mary Malone seems decent though, not like I imagined her but it works.

Disappointed to see you aren’t taking your GoT stance and refusing to watch.

You have disappointed me greatly.

Way way too old but yes, clearly Pullman wrote the character fresh from another viewing of The Big Lebowski
