I think that the cast for the main characters was great (to the point that ‘on paper’ it looks better than this TV series), but it was visually dull and gutted of meaning.

The trailer for the TV series looks streets ahead in that respect.

I can’t see Lin Manuel Miranda doing a better job than Sam Elliott who I picture so clearly now when rereading the books, but this still looks miles better.

Yeah, Elliott was pretty much perfect, as were Nicole Kidman and Eva Green and Dakota Blue Richards. Daniel Craig was good as well.

I think the main improvement on the casting is Dafne Keen, if Logan is anything to go by she’ll be the perfect Lyra.

I don’t buy Miranda as Scoresby, he’s supposed to be Han Solo with a hot air balloon ffs, he looks like a geography teacher

Worried about Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter - Kidman was utterly perfect. Can only see Tilda Swinton doing a better job tbh.

I’m really excited, but also a bit nervous. Also seems like McAvoy is playing Asriel as less of a dick in this version, which would be a shame.

Also seems like they’ve given away a lot of the plot that’s supposed to be a mystery. We don’t find out Asriels big plan until The Subtle Knife do we?

Mmm they’re all a bit moustache twirly for be. Mrs Coulter is supposed to be charming, the exact opposite of what an antagonist is supposed to be like.

Absolutely. I’d have gone for Hayley Atwell or Gemma Arterton personally.

Yeah Asriel is meant to be charming early on, which is how he gets people to find all his trips isn’t he? I mean not a good father but definitely charming to other adults.

I think I like Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter from the trailer, but I am also concerned about the portrayal of Lee Scoresby which tempers my excitement somewhat as I feel like some of his bits are the most emotionally engaging in the book.
