holiday homes

power down, Che, no points available here - this isn’t about buying one.

Growing up, did you know anyone with a holiday home? Did your family have access to one?

My dad’s boss had a cottage on the IoW for about a decade, and coz we were poor it meant every holiday from 2 to 12 years old for me was that island. The cottage was nice in a dilapidated way, and I heard he sold it at a loss coz the coast line was crumbing close to where it was based, but I do have good memories from the garden there.

after that we had a similar kindness offered by a Belgian family we knew who had a little A frame place in their equivalent of centre parks, so at least three years saw us drive all the way to Oostduinkerke to take them up on their offer.

Was it ever a thing for you? Does granny have a villa in Mallorca? Gimme the goods. Do you know anyone with one now?

Do you know anyone with one now? I think maybe they’re a dead concept.

I think some people I know have parents with caravans.

Was thinking about timeshares the other day and wondering if they still exists.

Went on holiday aged 18 with some mates to my gfs family villa in Torremolinos.

Also did a weekend in a mates families static on Anglesey. Does a static caravan count?

yeah THAT in particular feels like its day is done. One of the cool kids at school had one but I think that’s the only person I knew. Maybe an American thing.

Was thinking about rotating timeshares as a concept where you can gona different place each year.

They’re a huge problem, especially in Wales:

For some reason everyone in the North West regards Abersoch as being like the French Riviera but it’s actually just a few crap pubs and a beach full of people on obnoxious water vehicles.

A Place in the Sun is still going strong, so I guess they retain their popularity for some. I think I might feel kind of restricted if I had one, I’d prefer to have the option of just going where I want on a whim.

Best mate at school’s parents had a timeshare in the Lake District, but her mother was also a generational landlord so

so it’s largely rich Welsh folk wanting coastal property in addition to city living?

I meant the North West of England

yeah that’s I think maybe what will make them less and less popular with new generations who are used to cheap flights and accommodation options in a ginormous number of places.

My parents bought a place in France about 10 years ago

Went once with the kids (while my folks were there) - didn’t enjoy being on holiday with my folks and the swimming lake in the town couldn’t be swum in cos it was covered in green algae stuff. Anywhere worth going had to be driven to, never went back

They’ve spent lots of time there over the years , but also seems to have been a massive hassle and source of stress with damp problems , grumpy neighbours etc . They could have probably had a load of holidays in hotels in France for similar outlay

Anyway, they completed selling it this week which I’m pleased about cos I won’t have to hear all the boring stories about the problems with the boring things . The sale was also complicated and boring

My friend’s, partner’s, gran’s house was sitting empty in Yorkshire a few years ago and we used go there every now and then for holidays. It was good. Then the parents refurbed it and now it’s a holiday home. Never knew anyone with one as a kid or teen or anything though

hey the emoji worked

I genuinely have no idea why that was there
