Doing gardening for the first time in my life tomorrow.

Need to dog-proof the fences and get rid of some of the bushes and trees in preparation for the next stage of the garden beautification project.

Seems a waste ripping out three fruit trees, but I’ve no idea what they (last owners? Developers?) were thinking by planting three trees in a pretty small garden. Gonna get rid before they start causing problems.

Anyone ever painted kitchen cupboard doors?

Is changing a light fitting something that I can do without being a qualified electrician?

Wall-mounted shelves in a cupboard that will have books on them but the wall might be plasterboard rather than load bearing, wise?

Legally? If you’re just switching fittings it’s fine. It just has to be a “competent person”. I’ve done quite a few in recent years.

If you can find the studs in the wall and secure the shelves to those you’d probably be alright. Wouldn’t recommend books on a shelf just mounted on plasterboard though - sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

This can be done, just need to know what you are doing and use the correct fittings. Walls are surprisingly strong.

I’ve done loads of these recently. Bit time consuming but quite straightforward. Had to go up into the loft 3 times for one of them because there wasn’t enough wiring for me to use.

Yeah. For most of the new light fittings it wasn’t a problem but I replaced the bedroom light (standard hanging bulb) with a 4 spotlight thing and I needed a couple of inches more wiring. For the other 4 lights I did this wasn’t a problem.

I think anything electrical these days ‘must be done by a qualified person’ if you read the instructions, but in practice electrics are pretty straightforward.

Done about half a dozen lights over the last few months. Some are a piece of piss, some are fiddly as fuck. The two we had from Wilko were a nightmare because it was basically a box of electrical components and the light fitting in many pieces. But it’s basically like wiring a plug up twice, on the ceiling.

Garden is the next step, hopefully in time for warm weather. Need the patio extending and probably decking over the bottom of the garden where it drops off down a slope. Not a chance of doing it myself, so had the landscape gardener bloke down the street round for a quote.

To lay 27 slabs, the quote was £1300! I was expecting about £300. A further £3600 for a bit of decking. Fuck me, the quote for the patio is what I was expecting for the full job. Think I might get another quote…

Quite funny actually, I’d expect the entire garden to be ripped up and re-done for £5k!
