Here’s a performance of the resurrected “Navigating Flood Regions” from their rather infamous appearance on Austin City Limits in 2004:
They’re so annoying on that dvd
First half of the performance was great. But then the booze caught up with them, and half the band were barely able to stand by the end, let alone sing or play their instruments.
I think this was the show where somebody misread the situation and grabbed a baby from the crowd as well?
Really need to see this.

It’s all on YouTube now
It manages to be kinda great and kind of a car crash at the same time, haha!
This is the one where Nate takes a big tumble mid-song & can barely get back onto his feet. Bob even looks sloshed in the preview thumbnail
Ahahahahah he fucking CLEANS himself out. Brilliant.

Updated personal leaderboard:
- Self Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia
- Devil Between My Toes
- Forever Since Breakfast
- Sandbox
I’ll have to start hiding these behind the dropdown thingy eventually, these lists are gonna start getting real long
so, definitely the strongest of the pre-classic albums - and probably in my top 10 overall?
The Bad
Slopes of Big Ugly is pretty irredeemable, Qualifying Remainder is interestingly atmospheric and the outro is strong but not a great track overall, Short on Posters should be longer - builds up to that great peak then comes down again too fast, the vocal production on Navigating Flood Regions is very dodgy and does steal away a little of the impact of that track sadly
The Good
Everything else! if earlier albums had me complaining about a lack of grasp on melodies, this one is stuffed full - 12 of 14 tracks have huge ear-catching hooks, lyrics or riffs that get stuck in my head and demand being replayed. Bob is in full flow here
Great Blake Street does the jangle-pop thing from FSB but now actually sounds like GBV instead of an REM-cosplay - the vocal harmonies on the chorus are just perfect. Paper Girl and Liar’s Tale are two more entries into the category of Bob’s flawless 60s pop ballads. Navigating Flood Regions and An Earful O’ Wax are two top-tier rockers, riffs and power for days. White Whale and Trampoline could be two of Bob’s best early vocal performances, love how much more central his voice is and how confident he sounds
Earful is probably my standout track, the last 90 seconds building up and the snare rolls soaring off into that solo - pure ear candy to me. Think an easy 8/10 album here, does the ideal GBV thing of having stacks of memorable songs, but they also all blend together into one hazy lofi whole, as it should be
i quite like it
- Devil Between My Toes
- Self Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia
- Forever Since Breakfast
- Sandbox
Think it’s just weirdly muffled right as they’re putting out tracks that sound bigger than anything else they’d done before
Before we start thinking about the next album, here is an interesting article about the abandoned GBV album from which Self-Inflicted quickly emerged:
And we’ll need to touch on Power of Suck when we get to that era
Missing one track (Uncle Dave)
damn, Steve Wilbur is a much bigger part of early-GBV than I’d have thought
even more soaring guitar solo courtesy of Steve Wilbur, who’d also go on to play the legendary solo on Self-Inflicted ‘s “An Earful o’ Wax.”
