And heyyy letās throw the great party
Today, for the rest of our lives
The funās just about to get started
So throw the switch, itās rock n roll time
Might be my favourite section of music ever

Who the fuck let them get a violin involved, so fucking good
Demos: I played violin on āBlimps Go 90,ā although not very well. When we recorded Propeller, I brought a violin to the studio and Bob said, āWhat the hell, letās give it a try.ā Itās on āOver The Neptune/Mesh Gear Foxā and āWeedking.ā Itās low in the mix with tons of effects. So we tried it again on āBlimpsā but we didnāt have capabilities for mass effects on it. We also would use trash cans, amp drops, and anything else we could find to utilize as an instrument. I think it shows the unfettered creativity, independence, and disregard for industry norms that we had at that time and you can feel it on the record.
From an article about Alien Lanes so Iāll try to remember to post the rest in a few weeks!
Back to Saturn X ranking
Damn Good Mr Jam (āanything for freeā) > Sopor Joe > Chicken Blows > Back to Saturn X > Broken Horse (early version of Tractor Rape Chain? Need to track it down) > Fantasy Creeps > Weird version of Buzzards > Mr Japan (ātime of our livesā)
Well, this is quite the step up in quality
The ending of Ergo Space Pig is almost Stones-y!
āMetal Mothersā has a kinda mutant Oasis vibe to it, doesnāt it? One of my faves on the album, so addictive.
Iām being completely serious when I say that there is some sort of Hollywood movie waiting to be made about this period in the bands history*
Pretty much everybody bar his bandmates were telling Bob he was wasting his fucking time. Bobās then-wife reportedly thought his music was absolutely awful, his Dad was annoyed Bob hadnāt developed his sporting prowess instead. Interest in the band was still pretty much zero, to the extent that Bob glumly decided to prioritise his teaching career and mothball the band as a going concern. Propeller was very much intended as the definitive final statement from the band.
What happened next is absolutely extraordinary. Just think of all the hundreds, even thousands, of songs which wouldāve remained unwritten if Propeller hadnāt eventually found its way into the right hands.
The moral of the story: never, ever, ever give up on chasing your dreams.
*who on earth would get to play Bob in āGBV: The Motion Pictureā???
Paddy Considine!
I do this with album colors too, thought I was weird , I might still be but good to know other weird people too. Itās one of the reasons I always like a first listen of an album to be with physical media instead of streaming , so I have the cover in hand and make that association.
I also have to have the album art for our band before finalizing the track list , so that I pick the songs which fit with the album color scheme!
Not sure what more can be said about Propeller, other than to say that it represents the first stone-cold classic from the band and heralded the start of their imperial phase
The easiest update to my personal GBV leaderboard to date:
WHERE ARE THE POLLS?
Full versions of all the songs that appear in Back to Saturn X Radio Report (Back to Saturn X was another abandoned album apparently)
Disappointed by the amount of CHAT this week. Even if all youāre saying is āthis track is a fucking belterā itās appreciated! Grumble grumble
Iāll probably come in with some late opinions over the week, havenāt had much time to dive back into it this time
I listened to it once while getting very rained on and didnāt really take it in, will do so again this afternoon (without the rain).
POLLS for PROPELLER
Only got round to doing my Propeller re-listen today (but I know it well obviously)
I forgot about big rawk guitar solo in Circus World, kinda want to know who played it
Over the Neptune, Weedking and Quality of Armor are all superb so those
Red Gas Circle is really underrated though imo
And 14 Cheerleader Coldfront being the first Tobin lead vocal
Basic take is it starts incredibly, but it does tail off a bit at the end. Totally understand why people would have it as a masterpiece, but I think for me itās sometimes overshadowed by what came after
whereas the good earlier albums get a boost from being compared to soemthing like Sandbox or the blandness of Forever Since Breakfast
