šŸ”„ Hot Freaks: the Guided By Voices Listening Club (Final results time! 40 album ranking list! Freedom! - post 2160)

I like the writeup for this release over at the Constant Bleeder fanblog. Think he nails it when he states the record is pleasant but lacking in much character.

GBV wishes to thank: Jim Carter, Jim Pollard, Kevin Fennell, Ed Dwyer, Tobin Sprout, Jim Davidson, Bruce + Mark Greenwald, Nick + John, Mike Tomlinsonā€¦Geoā€¦

Couple of familiar names in the Thank Yous anyway.

Who knew they were such fans of Big Break

Another striking thing about this record: this has got to be, by a very big distance, the most straightforwardly ā€œnormalā€ set of lyrics Bob has ever penned?

Zero songs about kicking elves or Apollonian bronzefoil on here

yeah the title is probably the weirdest thing about it

This back catalogue looks intimidating, but Iā€™ll give it a go.

Donā€™t cave to the demands for the obscure stuff though! From experience you accomodate someoneā€™s request at the outset to slot in the Japanese import B Side remixes album, and when it eventually rolls around youā€™re left talking to yourself for the weekā€¦

only about 6 weeks away from the proper solid-gold classics, I believe in you!

Enjoyed it, not sure Iā€™ll return to it anytime soon but itā€™s a good sign of things to come. Looking forward to more!

If nothing else, I will finally get an answer to the question ā€˜how much Guided By Voices is too much Guided By Voices?ā€™

Really quite liked this, I mean itā€™s not outstanding but Iā€™m a sucker for mid 80s college rock. Kinda nuts that something this solid just gets buried in the tidal wave of the rest of the wider pollard discographyā€¦

One down, only 736 more albums to go!

And to think, I was originally going to wait until Propeller before joining in

Looking forward to this; there must be literally hundreds of great GBV songs I havenā€™t heard yet because of how overwhelming their back catalogue is, so this is a good excuse to put that right. Already enjoying ā€œForever Since Breakfastā€ which I would never have thought to listen to otherwise.

To that end, might be an idea to poll the top 2 or 3 songs from each release and add them to a rolling playlist (like the Tom Waits listening club)ā€¦ although I appreciate that might be a lot of admin, so no worries if not!

Forever Since Breakfast!

Iā€™d never really heard it until I finally got it on CD a few months back as part of the Hardcore UFOs boxset. It is one of the best discs of said boxset. Mostly decent tunes. Some real highlights (Land Of Danger is a good opener and I really like She Wants To Know - itā€™s a legitimate hit!). Especially if, as has been pointed out, you dig 80s REM and the more jangly end of college rock. Also has that kind of Byrds-y guitar and harmonising going on (in a more rudimentary way) and that Robyn Hitchcock-y surreal love songs type lyrics. Obviously, we know GBV wouldnā€™t stick to this vibe. The path was much more unpredictable than what you might expect after hearing this. But itā€™s a great little record!

Only just spotted that some kind soul has posted the whole 42 minutes recording to YouTube recently. Would imagine Rockathon will get this pulled pretty quickly:
