on first listen itās actually more immediately likeable than the first few REM albums?

Amazing!
Never really gave this album more than one or two spins and genuinely couldnāt remember any of the tracks. She Wants To Know is a pretty good song now I give it a proper listen.
I owned most of their output (band and solo stuff) up to Universal Truths - used to it order from Rockathon and then get stung for the customs duty when it hit my doorstep - sold some of it over time but still have a stupid amount of their stuff. Saw them a ton of times too. Little thereafter really clicked with me but Iāve been a regular attendee at the annual Euroheedfest or GBV day in London for the last ten years and keep telling myself I need to give the 200 albums since 2001 a proper listen at some point. Will be fun keeping an eye on this thread.
Half Smiles (the original āfinalā album) is in their top 5 ever imho
Letās Ride is really lovely - feel like almost every track is a minute too long but some great moments. Not that familiar with GBV beyond Alien Lanes and the best of so looking forward to joining in on this!
Please give la la land a go if you have time. For me itās the best and most distilled in essence of all the reformation lps. If you enjoy that thereās bits to enjoy in all the others. If you donāt enjoy it, weāllā¦youāve probably saved yourself some time
rounding up - Forever Since Breakfast
just one top track this time since itās so short
Am I correct in saying that āDevil Between My Toesā is up next? For some reason RYM lists Sandbox as the earlier release, not sure why.
Yep youāre right, not sure why that quirk has developed - I think Spotify shows it too
Already looking forward to Devil!
I think itās because the actual release date for Sandbox is unknown, so itās just entered as ā1987ā on RYM which the system probably defaults to 01/01/87 so it gets placed before Devil (which came out in February apparently)
I thought Iād heard a decent amount of GBV albums, but although thirteen albums would be many bandās entire output, even one that has been around as long as them, it is of course not even a third of their discography of just studio albums! So Iām going to try and keep up with this thread to flesh out that number. Past experience of these sorts of threads tends to make this unlikely but Iāll try!
Iāve always wanted to fall in love with GBV and I always enjoy their albums, some more than others, but in the past nothing has really got its hooks in me and made me want to go back. Iāve only returned to a handful of albums for repeat listens (Universal Truths, Last Smiles being two examples). Maybe going through them methodically will ignite more of a spark, but even if it doesnāt it would be good to say Iāve heard all (or at least most) of their albums.
Iād never heard Forever Since Breakfast, in fact Iād never even heard of it, and blimey you lot werenāt lying, it sounds a lot like REM!
finally got this on, great artefact! still canāt get over Bob-with-guitar and no air kicks
Moving swiftly onto the first real album in the catalogue - Devil Between My Toes!
Will give this a spin in a little bit. As Iāve said elsewhere, Iāve not spent a huge amount of time on the pre-Propeller stuff, so itāll be an interesting exercise for me. I seem to remember liking Devil more than Sandbox, weāll see.
Devil is my fav until Propeller
Itās so good. First thing I ever heard of theirs when my friend put it on my iPod nano
thatās a bold entry point!
Yeah I donāt think thereās many people who would have heard that first. Iām freaking out now realising that happened 15 years agoā¦
Hereās my general approach. You might find it helpful:
Day 1 - Excitement at seeing new listening club album up
Day 2 - Attempt to clear existing backlog to make time for that weekās listening club album
Days 3-7 - Forget listening club exists
Day 8 - Feel excited to see that thread title has been updated with the next album. Panic listen to previous weekās album to get it out of the way.
Repeat.
Ahhh itās like Iām back in the Sonic Youth thread all over again
