šŸ”„ Hot Freaks: the Guided By Voices Listening Club (Final results time! 40 album ranking list! Freedom! - post 2160)

Never thought to check the GBV subreddit. Might post our results there once weā€™ve finished the whole club

Is it an active place? I try and ignore the existence of Reddit because I already waste enough time on the internet (i.e. here).

Not especially tbh, if you really wanted to waste time weā€™d be deep into the GBV forums - I spent a little time there and even I couldnā€™t hack it

Fair, you should share some of our research/findings over there though, yeah! Itā€™s important cultural study and shouldnā€™t be in a walled garden.

Three or four strong singles doesnā€™t save ELL from ending up near the bottom of the table, unfortunately. Way too many skippers to merit being placed any higher.

First time listening to ELL, nowhere near as immediate as the previous two. I will give it another spin but overall it felt to me that there were far too many 3+ minute songs that should have been little sub 1 minute vignettes. Stretching them past the 50 second mark had me reaching for the skip button more than once. Although saying that a couple of the shorter ones I just basically disliked (eg. Reflections In A Metal Whistle).

Not heard any of the further albums until Space Gun so Iā€™m hoping theyā€™ll at least partially grab me a little more than this one has.

Blazing Gentlemen is a banging album. Iā€™m an English Little League apologist but youā€™re right that his solo stuff that year was a lot more consistent

Yep, both Blazing Gentlemen and Honey Locust Honky Tonk were streets ahead of English Little League IMO.

Both your post and @XenoPariah 's got me excited about Blazing Gentlemen so I listened to a couple of tracks at random and they seemed great, really exciting like his first couple of solo albums!

then I put the whole album on andā€¦ I much prefer ELL after all. Over an album I donā€™t like the guitar sound or the songwriting at all (feels really airless and uninspired a lot of the time)

I remember thinking Honey Locust Honky Tonk was pretty good though, so Iā€™ll listen to that one next

Gave ELL a second go yesterday. Glad I did as I realised I enjoyed the first half of it more than I thought first time.

However I still maintain a lot of the tracks are too long (relatively for GBV) and Bobā€™s voice on a couple is so bad it sounds like some terrible karaoke singer, Biographer Seahorse and Reflections in a Metal Whistle were the two worst culprits for that imo.

Ah well, onto the next one!

i remember being glad Bob sounded a lot better live/on the albums around 2019 because yeah, he started having some pretty bad vocal takes on some post 2012 albums. Not sure why as he clearly still had/has the voice, maybe itā€™s just the one take thing finally truly working against him

Time to kick on with the next OG line-up album - MOTIVATIONAL JUMPSUIT

might be boring to keep insisting on this kind of thing, but I genuinely like this song - not being a shitty contrarian, just my actual shitty opinion. Not even just to make other songs seem more accomplished by contrast (although it does that), I just like the sounds

Big fan of this track, really feels like a classic GBV trackā€¦ some might say slightly too much even, but not me. Canā€™t remember any other songs on the album though

yeah this just got played in a round of the GBV ML round and it stood out to me. Good timing to ease me into this album!

Much like English Little League, this was one I listened to once or twice around release and didnā€™t go back to for a long time or have any strong feelings about initially, but it was in my local HMV for a fiver (CD) for ages and I eventually brought it home* and was more impressed by it than I remembered.

Itā€™s not as good as the 2012 albums but thereā€™s some pretty decent stuff on here, and probably a bit stronger than English Little League overall. The first few tracks link together in a really nice way thatā€™s a bit like the way Bee Thousand flows.

*The day I was finally inspired to buy it was the day they announced their 2019 London shows, decided to go round and grab it after work and get into it to celebrate. I think they also had it on vinyl for quite cheap which I regret not grabbing now.
