Unfortunately terrible plodding shite becomes more and more prevalent in the coming weeks!
not a lot more to add to whatās been said above - a fun, varied, quirky album that really plays into the bandās strengths. Hooks come and go, leave you wanting more, and the weaker tracks donāt outstay their welcome
not sure thereās any masterpiece tracks tbh, think itās all just very solid and enjoyable. Bury the Mouse is up there with the best of the reunion album openers, Angelic Weirdness hits the Half Smiles sweet spot for me with the acoustic and awesome bass runs - love the bass on Photo Range Within too, seems to be a strength of this version of the band.
Cohesive Scoops is really just one of Bobās sunniest prettiest melodies in a long while, and Blue House Jay is real fun with the organ too, almost a pop-Fall vibe to it. The run from Down the Island to Even Next might be my fav section, some beautiful resigned melodies on DTC and Even Next mixed in with the upbeat bops of My Angel and More Reduction Linda
drops off at the end a bit - of the last 8 tracks only It Will Never Be Simple, Coming Back From Now On (so fun!) and End it With Light stand out, so that section is slightly sluggish. Wish the closer lasted longer too, itās real strong and it barely gets going before it stops
felt like an 8 before I clocked the drop off, but a very solid 7 still. And definitely a songwriting format I wished they leant into more again

just in time for the warmer weather weāre SWEATING THE PLAGUE
I always mark this as a change into a new epoch for the band, where they begin to do more records with conventional numbers of songs and classic rock track lengths.
Still running slightly behind so just revisiting Warp & Woof now.
At the time I was a bit underwhelmed by it despite really liking some of the songs, I think the way it was described in advance had me expecting a bit more.
As mentioned thereās some very good standouts but they maybe donāt hit as hard as the highlights of say Space Gun. There are a good few fairly forgettable songs but it makes such a difference when the forgettable songs are only about a minute and a half long rather than dragged out for a full 3 or 4 minutes like Zeppelin and a lot of the albums still to come.
Probably is one of the stronger reunion mk2 efforts in retrospect.
Always liked the album cover too.
Cool Jewels and Aprons is better than I remember, just missed out for me here
Sweating the Plague was initially the first of many GBV albums that I listened to once and never again, but I ended up getting the vinyl in a Rough Trade sale a couple of years ago. I remember not being impressed on first listen but it growing on me slightly after buying it, but I still havenāt listened to it that much and donāt remember that many of the tracks so Iāll stick it on the record player today or my next WFH day.
Heavy Like The World was a strong single and The Very Second stood out to me when they played it on their lockdown livestream.
will post the current album rankings since weāre about 75% of the way there now - once thereās been a little more time for Warp votes to come in
Will get to Sweating the Plague in the next day or two. Itās been a while since I last gave this one a listen - I think I liked the idea of the album (GBV try Heavy Rawk) rather than the actual album itself, but weāll see.
I do really like that artwork, though.
I liked this quite a lot when it came out, as the sound and less tracks format was different. But now in retrospect this really started the rut of chug chug , start stop 4 mins songs. So now with that association,itās fallen in my estimation.
Gave it a re-listen and was surprised. Starts of really strong with Downer , Street Party, elementary.
Heavy like the world is good but sounds too much like the other song above. Crickets is another really good one. It has its share of boring chuggers but not as much as others. So overall still like this one.
As said above , great cover art, might be my favorite GBV cover.
Yeah Crickets is lovely - Doug vocal?
My Wrestling Days Are Over is one of my all time GBV titles I think
Think itās Kevin March on the vocals, have to check the credits but seem to remember he wrote that one.
Kinda fun that the album loops too, the noisy guitar bit at the end of Beard is the same as the start of Downer
