Sounds a bit springs over substance

Weird to acknowledge you’ve damaged something and then try and get out of paying for it

definitely this. if they say “oh we have to destroy it for insurance” or some shite you can tell them to f off

worst case scenario it costs you £200 and youre stood outside the hotel with a mattress you don’t need. lose a penny find a penny

even then, just bring it to a homeless shelter.

Tbh I don’t think I told them that. I did admit a little bit was spilled, though.

Think I’ll dispute it and quote the T+Cs. See what happens then.

sorry i didn’t mean that the way it might have come out, it’s like i said earlier in the thread - i don’t think some beer spilt on a mattress means it can’t be cleaned to the point where it’s like new.

can’t you just cancel the debit card and do a runner? probably what I’d do.

I mean, I can purposely leave less than the fee on my Monzo card in case they try to charge it.

What’s the likelihood of them attempting to take it further? At a small business I used to work at they’d threaten legal action if people didn’t pay for stuff, but I don’t think they ever actually followed it up. Don’t know if a bigger chain might - surely not worth the bother?

i’d probably take the risk tbh. 200 quid is a lot of money, and fuck em if they’re a big chain.

haven’t read the whole thread, but have you even admitted to fault yet? just say it must have been there before your stay if you haven’t

I did tbh, but told the truth in that it was a small amount and surely, surely wasn’t enough for what they’re saying it is.

presuming you’re in england - do they have your full name and address as part of the booking?

if so it’s possible they could take you to court via the small claims court procedure, that said if they’re a massive chain, and given the relatively small amount involved, it’s probably unlikely they’d do that given the cost of raising the action and instructing a solicitor

Yeah they’ve got that. It’s my fear really. Weighing up whether to take the risk - if it goes to that would I be liable to pay a lot more in fees? I’m such a terrible adult.

According to this, I don’t think so.

if they submitted a claim and you lost it’s likely you’d need to pay the £200 plus the cost of them lodging the claim, you normally wouldn’t have to pay any legal fees they’d incurred

£200 is quite cheap for a bowl of rice large enough to put a mattress in

I’ve just taken someone to court and so am quite familiar with the process, they would have to send you a letter before claim first which would give you at leat 2 weeks to pay with no extra cost, then if they go ahead with the claim you would be liable for the fee which is £35 (sliding scale but based on £200), you can then admit the claim, admit part of the claim, or defend it, if this results in it goes to court (which it won’t if you admit it) it is another hearing fee £55 I think, plus up to £95 for their day off/annual leave plus their travel. So really there is no risk if you wait for the letter, and the big risk of costs of court can be avoided even if they do proceed as you can pay at anytime (would have to pay the £35 though)

Assuming this is England

If it was a big chain I’d personal definitely try to avoid it, sure they have insurance, industrial cleaning facilities, unless they can prove they did have to buy a new one
