I did tbh, but told the truth in that it was a small amount and surely, surely wasn’t enough for what they’re saying it is.

presuming you’re in england - do they have your full name and address as part of the booking?

if so it’s possible they could take you to court via the small claims court procedure, that said if they’re a massive chain, and given the relatively small amount involved, it’s probably unlikely they’d do that given the cost of raising the action and instructing a solicitor

Yeah they’ve got that. It’s my fear really. Weighing up whether to take the risk - if it goes to that would I be liable to pay a lot more in fees? I’m such a terrible adult.

if they submitted a claim and you lost it’s likely you’d need to pay the £200 plus the cost of them lodging the claim, you normally wouldn’t have to pay any legal fees they’d incurred

I’ve just taken someone to court and so am quite familiar with the process, they would have to send you a letter before claim first which would give you at leat 2 weeks to pay with no extra cost, then if they go ahead with the claim you would be liable for the fee which is £35 (sliding scale but based on £200), you can then admit the claim, admit part of the claim, or defend it, if this results in it goes to court (which it won’t if you admit it) it is another hearing fee £55 I think, plus up to £95 for their day off/annual leave plus their travel. So really there is no risk if you wait for the letter, and the big risk of costs of court can be avoided even if they do proceed as you can pay at anytime (would have to pay the £35 though)

If it was a big chain I’d personal definitely try to avoid it, sure they have insurance, industrial cleaning facilities, unless they can prove they did have to buy a new one
