He’s alright

I adore him. Harmony in Ultraviolet is probably in my top 25 albums of all time. Seen him live a couple of times.
Just find it perpetually baffling that Ravedeath is where he zeitgeisted into indie consciousness. It’s the one album of his I don’t enjoy.

Ravedeath is the first album I heard of his…due to that Zeitgeist…so I do have a lot of affection for it. But it’s not my favourite of his, nor is it my album of 2011.

I think that was true for quite a few people. TBF if it had been my first exposure, I would have probably thought it was great too. Was super hyped for it as it was the first new release from him since I discovered him around the time of AIC.

This was the state I was in for the release of Virgins. Luckily I wasn’t disappointed (I hope you agree with this).

Virgins was a return to form, aye

I’m with you on R.A.P. music.

I struggle to listen to Familiars unless I’ve forgotten I’m listening to it. It’s nice enough, but each track is just the same thing over and over again.

Great idea for a thread. Gave me lots to think about…

2010: The National - High Violet, Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Would still keep High Violet in joint-top place but would replace the Suburbs with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The Suburbs still clocks in very close behind and remains in my All-Decade top 15 for now so it’s certainly not a disgraceful drop
Current Ranking in All-Decade: 2 (High Violet) and 12 (The Suburbs)

2011: Bon Iver - S/T
Would largely stand by this one, though might add The English Riviera as joint-top place. Both are currently in my All-Decade top 20
Current Ranking in All-Decade: 15

2012: Tame Impala - Lonerism
This is still a phenomenal album but has dropped 5(!) places due to the sheer number of masterpieces in what’s probably the strongest year of the decade so far. Surpassed by Good Kid MAAD City, Attack on Memory, Visions, Channel Orange, and Bloom.
Current Ranking in All-Decade: 22

2013: Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
Still clear winner of this year. Beyoncé S/T comes in second but by quite a ways
Current Ranking in All-Decade: 4

2014: Todd Terje - It’s Album Time
Biggest loser of this re-evaluation. Still an excellent, playful album, but surpassed by (in order) Black Messiah, RTJ2, Home Like No Place there Is, Alvvays, Malibu (Anderson Paak), LP1 (FKA Twigs), Too Bright, They Want my Soul, and Our Love (Caribou)
Current Ranking in All-Decade: Somewhere in the 70s

2015: Julia Holter - Have you in my Wilderness
Still an utter classic. Feels very odd to have an album as momentous as To Pimp a Butterfly outside of the top spot but this is just perfect.
Current Ranking in All-Decade: 3

2016: David Bowie - Blackstar
Don’t see this going anywhere soon in a quiet year that had lots of very good albums but relatively few classics (Solange and Chance are really the only competitors that I’ve heard so far). Time will tell but nearly two years on this might actually be my favourite Bowie album
Current Ranking in All-Decade: 18

i can’t fuckin remember what came out last week let alone this decade

2016: A Tribe Called Quest - We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service

Classic. Don’t see anything from last year touching this.

2015: Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

Probably #2 now behind Kamasi Washington’s The Epic which I listen to more, and has ridiculous replay value due to it’s length and consistency.

2014: D’Angelo and The Vanguard - Black Messiah

Unchanged. Top 3 of decade.

2013: Ka - The Night’s Gambit

Still excellent and holds its own, but I don’t revisit it that often. In all honesty, this year was a bit ropey. I’ll go with DJ Rashad’s Double Cup or Jai Paul’s surprisingly enduring Demos

2012: Jam City - Classical Curves

Still love this, and it’s definitely been very influential but if anything that’s diluted it a bit. Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music on the other hand has really come into its own.

2011: Destroyer - Kaputt

Danny Brown’s XXX would edge this out now.

2010: Kanye West: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Probably still my favourite.

2016: Touche amore - Stage Four - Still a great record but haven’t gone back to it, Human Performance would probably overtake it now?

2015: Viet Cong - s/t - Choosing between this and Self Defense Family’s Heaven is Earth was impossible at the time, and it still is, but would still stick by both (even if they’re not called Viet Cong anymore)

2014: Sun Kil Moon - Benji - Not listened to it since, but it was magical at the time. Again I think Parquet Courts’ Sunbathing Animal has meant more to me since.

2013: Deafheaven - Sunbather - Again not really gone back to it but still think it’s great, ditto John Hopkins’ Immunity. Again Parquet Courts’ Light Up Gold has really risen in my estimation since then (I’m really into Parquet Courts.)

2012: Title Fight - Floral Green - Still listen to this every now and then, would still pick it.

2011: The Antlers - Burst Apart - I’d still probably go with this, though, as it did at the time David Comes to Life still runs it pretty close.

2010: The National - High Violet OR Titus Andronicus - The Monitor I can’t remember which of these I officially voted for at the time, I think maybe TA because I prefer Boxer, but I find TA a bit annoying these days. But fucking hell what a year 2010 was. These two, The Suburbs, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Teen Dream, Have One on Me, _ Cosmogramma_, Halcyon Digest, loads more: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4275323

I’d probably take Have One on Me now? Or High Violet… Or…

2010:

2011:

2012:

2013:

couldn’t find more recent ones weirdly but may have got bored

Ffs mine weren’t even right

Jfc, completely forgot I ranked Balam Acab (2011) and How to Dress Well (2012) as top albums. Barely listen to either now…certainly haven’t listened to any HTDW for years.

2010: 65daysofstatic - We Were Exploding Anyway

Oooft, fucking tough one this, it’s probably still my favourite album by my favourite band but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is absolutely the best album from this year and one of the best of the decade by a mile, it came out late in the year iirc so probably missed the cut back then. WWEA has to be usurped by it unfortunately

2011: Johnny Foreigner vs Everything

Rarely listen to this any more tbh but also don’t really listen to much else from this year that I can immediately think of, maybe Hello Sadness by LC!

2012: Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid MAAD City

Yeah, still comfortably this

2013: Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels

Weirdly, an album by 65daysofstatic that I don’t like as much as WWEA is probably the one that would pip this now, Wild Light (or Yeezus) now tbh

2014: I think it was either Young Fathers - DEAD or The Hotelier - Home, Like Noplace Is There

It would still be a tossup between those two as well

2015: Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

Yup, album of the decade innit

2016: Noname - Telefone

It’s still this but Isaiah Rashad pushes her very close with The Sun’s Tirade and ATCQ is right up there as well

2010: Swans - ‘My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky’

Not going to lie it does feel a little bit awkward having this and The Seer on my AOTY list given what’s subsequently transpired. Both are impressive but I do find them somewhat hard to revisit in the light of the allegations.

2011: PJ Harvey - ‘Let England Shake’

Haven’t listened to this in ages but for me, I don’t think there was any other album that could hold a candle to it that year.

2012: Swans - ‘The Seer’

See above

2013: Kayo Dot - ‘Hubardo’

Haven’t listened to it in ages, should really revisit it.

2014: Richard Dawson - ‘Nothing Important’

I do really enjoy this album but possibly because of the track length of the title track it’s one of those albums where I have to be quite committed to sitting down and listening to it for awhile.

2015: Stara Rzeka - ‘Zamknely sie oczy ziemi’

Strangely this is probably the album that’s stuck with me the most out of all of the ones I’ve mentioned so far, genuinely one of the most incredible records I’ve heard in years and sounds pretty much unlike anything else.

2016: Helen Money - Become Zero

Still probably my album of the year and I think one of her best albums so far.

2010: The Cast of Cheers - Chariot

Still great but I don’t return to it much. Felt like there was a lot of excitement and potential around it but they never lived up to it beyond this. The Redneck Manifesto - Friendship was of a similar ilk and was high on my list at the time but I’ve returned to it much more since and should probably take the top spot - was quite a strong year though so there are a few other contenders too.

2011: Battles - Gloss Drop

Still quite happy to have this as my AOTY. PJ Harvey - Let England Shake would be a strong challenger too though.

2012: BATS - The Sleep Of Reason

Again this is very good but I don’t listen to it that much these days. I probably should but I need to be in the right mood. Came out right at the end of the year and was blowing me away at list making time. These days the 2012 albums I listen to the most are probably Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory and Guided by Voices - The Bears For Lunch so it should probably go to one of those, though not sure which. Really one of those years with lots of good albums but no runaway winner.

2013: Future of the Left - How to Stop Your Brain in an Accident

Still a great return to form from a favourite band, happy to keep this at number 1. Closest challenger now would be Nick Cave - Push The Sky Away but I think FOTL still take it.

2014: Adebisi Shank - This is the Third Album…

Would probably keep this at number 1 too I think, properly mad and ridiculous swansong in the best way and the album launch/farewell gigs were great. (Second album was better all round but came out in too strong a year to win - see 2010)

2015: Girl Band - Holding Hands With Jamie

Oh no. Absolutely great bunch of lads, loved this album, loved all the singles/EPs before this album, love seeing them live (though haven’t seen them now since the release day of this), properly inventive band, massively anticipating whatever they put out next. But…I think I might have to bump this down to a close second now, having since discovered Thee Oh Sees - Mutilator Defeated At Last which has become a real standout of the decade. Sorry lads (and to Courtney Barnett who’s now pushed down to 3)

2016: Future of the Left - The Peace & Truce

Only last year but I had to go and check what I put. Think I had a hard time deciding a winner so went for FOTL by default, partly to give them a boost in the votes. It was a real grower for me though, think some DiS reaction might have been slightly mixed from what I remember, but once the tracks had embedded themselves in my brain I found it very reminiscent of the FOTL I originally fell in love with circa Curses. I think AOTY should have gone to one of my two runners up though, either Goat - Requiem or Exploded View - s/t. Not sure which deserves it more (hence plumping for FOTL in the first place).

Only been involved in this a couple years

2016
Suede - Night Thoughs
Yep still happy with that. The Peace and Truce of FOTL was and still is a major competitor though

2015
The Icarus Line - All Things Under Heaven
Hmm maybe Low - Ones & Sixes, Viet Cong - s/t or Ought - Sun Coming Down would shave it now but still love ATUH so would probably just leave as is

Was lurking on here in 2014 so don’t think I contributed but I probably would’ve gone

2014
Ought - More Than Any Other Day

Forgot about this. Definitely an album that has massively grown in my opinion. Would’ve been in my top 5 of the year if I could go back
