Is non-committal the same as flakey? Or is a flakey friend a committed friend who cancels a lot?

Probably a bit of overlap, I’d say it’s more someone who just doesn’t make their mind up until the very last possible moment, rather than someone who agrees to something only to cancel at the last moment.

It can be saddening but ultimately few people are noncommittal for no reason.

If you’re trying to get Roberto and Isabella booked in as your ‘headline guests’ for that long weekend Lake District cottage in September, you’re gonna have to face the fact that everyone loves Roberto and Isabella and they’ve got multiple invites for things every weekend from now until after Christmas, plus they both work really hard at their vocational jobs which they’re brilliant at and can’t really spare the leave days.

If you’ve got that one mate that keeps cancelling your pub meets last minute, then just accept that they’re dating like a maniac right now and you can still be mates once they’ve collapsed with exhaustion a few months from now.

Got a few friends who are either non-committal or commit and then un-commit, which is worse. If it happens a few times I guess I just see it as a sign of them not being too arsed about meeting up, which makes me stop trying, mainly out of not wanting to seem over-keen to hang out with people who aren’t fussed.

I’m similar.

Never used to bother me, but as I got older and time becomes more precious, and circumstances mean you have to factor in babysitters and that kind of thing, I made a decision to just leave it to them to arrange stuff. As a result, you end up sort of phasing people like that out. Works out fine. I think you need to accept that’ll you naturally drift from people over the years.

However, it’s worth differentiating between friends who are non-committal because they’ve an eye on something better to do, or friends who are non-committal because they’re just absolutely useless. Both are annoying, but the first lot can do one.

Yeah definitely. No babysitters for me but I do loads of shift work and when I’ve got evenings and weekends free it fucks me off when people cancel plans last minute.

Definitely get what you mean about naturally drifting apart though. It’s silly to fight that if it’s happening for a good reason.
