How do you discover new acts / new releases in 2025?

Nah nothing as obscure as all that, just a reliable early warning system for new releases.

Just here pretty much.

If I have time during the week I’ll go through everything in the new release thread. If I don’t have time then I wait til the poll gets filled in on Thursday and just cherry pick from the stuff at the top and the stuff where I recognise avatars from people I’ve gauged as relatively similar in taste.

Though now that @ma0sm has started making that collaborative playlist it’s even easier to listen to at least one song from everything.

Feels somewhat unfair to judge “less immediate” music in this way but eh, I am getting old now and I don’t have time for stuff too far outside my comfort zone anyway.

This is a decent barometer of recent Radio 6

and this prototype DiS chart does a job

Mostly happy accidents, as has always been the way. I’ll stumble across something that piques my interest whether I want to or not half the time.

Labels I follow on various platforms. A lot of the time I might see a new release from Kranky or RVNG that has cool artwork abd investigate further on that basis alone.

Brainwashed Radio tends to be the main podcast I listen to. Something curated > discoverability tools for me these days

That’s a good one. Hadn’t really thought about it but I definitely check things out if something stands out on a tv show or film.

Going to interesting festivals and exploring the lineups is a fairly big one for me now. Shout out to Le Guess Who, as so much of the great new music I discovered in the last few years was through their insanely wide and deep knowledge and curation.

Dunno really, posts on here, following labels and record shops and promoters and stuff online, and then if I see certain names popping up in those places again and again I feel I should probably give them a listen

Would anyone have an issue being quoted in an article / instagram story with some of your responses here? I know the social boards wanted me to ask for permission and I often don’t have time to DM everyone so don’t end up making stories with forum content, but this thread is brilliant and I’d love to shout out festivals like Le Guess Who

I’m happy for you to quote me but I’d rather you didn’t share the screen grab of my conversation with my eldest further afield.

The biggest thing I find with music discovery is not to be too worried if you end up discovering something years after it was released. There is so much music released in a year, that no sane person can be expected to keep up.

If it’s new and exciting to your ears, then that is the thrilling thing.

Here, various publications I follow on IG, the occasional post album radio thing on Spotify, Similar To artists on last.fm

If you like particular radio DJs or follow people on social media for recommendations, then try looking them up on bandcamp and giving them a follow.
It then shows what they are buying in your feed. I’ve definitely bought releases that way.
