1. My favourite ever hip-hop act.

I paid top dollar to go to the Wireless Festival just for them. I mean, the rest of the bill wasn’t too shabby, but they were who I was there for and they didn’t disappoint.

Gone for the debut as my album of choice, but could easily have picked TLET or MM. So good and that’s my listening for today sorted. Thanks!

Did you guys bother with the Tribe doc from a few years back?

Got it on my watchlist on Amazon Prime, but still haven’t got around to it. Worth a look?

I always mean to watch these things and never get around to them. any good? it’s on prime atm

Can I 5 it? Yes you can.

Can’t really choose between Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders and We Got it From Here…
for best album, they are all 5/5 albums.

Submitted this track for the music league Hip Hop round partly for the DiS name drop but its also just a great track from the Tribe, can’t think of many acts who produce work which sounds so effortlessly fun and fresh this far into their career.

low end theory is fucking class and i’ve just put it on. one of my ATDs brother who has got me into so much amazing music including bob dylan reckons a tribe called quest are the best hip hop band of all time. i’m not gonna argue with him.

@Shoebox1976uk @Jamos Yeah, definitely. I’m actually going to rewatch it as there is loads of it that is pretty hazy in my mind now. I recall some amazing footage of Q-Tip digging and making beats, although gotta say - he doesn’t come off very well overall.

My favorite hip hop act by far. They personified the socially conscious style of rap lyrics and beats differing away from a lot of gangster rap at the time. Their jazz samples brought a whole new perspective to what a band could achieve with precise lyrics, tone and street wise smarts. Paved the way for the Kendrick Lamars, Drake’s of today. One of the most profound impacts on a genre in my mind and one of the greatest acts to ever walk the face of the Earth.

Is this gonna be one of those threads where no one has a bad word to say about them and they end up scoring 3.63?

I FLOAT LIKE GRAVITY.

Not a big fan. Generally too upbeat for my own particular tastes and find a lot of the samples a bit grating.

Cheers, will definitely give a blast then. They have quite an extensive section in the Hip-Hop Evolution doc on Netflix as well if ever you’re after some more.

Its pretty good IMO

not the most original point but been listening to a lot of Gang Starr and Jungle Bros lately and thinking how good it mustve been knocking around in the 90s when there were so many great hip hop groups

fundamentally a more interesting format for me than hip hop solo artist, unless it’s like a super charismatic or talented mc

Do agree, but they didn’t exist in a vacuum. In 91 you had them, De La, Black Sheep, KMD, Del, Main Source, LONS, UMCs, Biz etc all making very progressive and bright sounding rap.
