Trying… not… to… rise…

You know what. You’re right. I should probably abstain in all fairness. Abstain.

I’m not equating them in quality! Just meant that both are the artists’ most well-known track from a debut album which was followed by records that most people think surpassed the debuts.

That wasn’t aimed at you! At all. I agree with your post. :+1:

But also listen to an album! Or maybe I’ll just need to find ways to fit them into more music league playlists. Not many people realise that they’re Australian you know…

Ha. Yeah, normally I’ll either abstain or listen to a few of the top scoring singles before dropping a score in these threads. Pretty good opportunity to discover a new band, and I’ve discovered a few new favourites through these threads (and also suffered through some real crap, but it’s a pretty low stakes investment).

Used to always listen to The Low End Theory when I was going round the big Asda in university, it was kind of “My Thing.” Have rinsed the first 3, they just knocked them out of the park eh. Surprised to hear about this Georgie Porgy thing, glad it never saw the light of day. 5 please.

Gave ‘Midnight Marauders’ a go yesterday. similarly to ‘LET’ I found it to be pretty good but none of it blew me away. Production seemed to have a bit more depth, playfulness and variation than ‘LET’. I’ll stick with it for a bit but Tribe are a 3 for me.

Maybe give We Got It From Here a go, if what you’re looking for is variation in the production. Wider in scope than the earlier records which are obviously products of their time. Sacrilegious to some, but I’d say it’s on a par with their best albums of the 90s (while obviously never being as influential or boundary breaking) and might be an easier point of entry for some.

If ‘MM’ clicks with me at some point I probably will. Don’t think it’s lack of variation in the beats or production that’s the problem though, as I said in a later post I think it’s the content of the lyrics and also the style of rapping. It’s a bit too laid back for my tastes and the lyrics aren’t really pulling me in. I’ve got ‘MM’ on now and it sounds great. Not sure that’s enough to keep me listening long term though.

Yeah, I mean, if you’re not really into the rapping that’s gonna be a sticking point. MM is my personal favourite and what I’d consider the best sounding Tribe record, but it’s lush, mellow and nocturnal. Maybe at least give We the People a go. That’s angry and political, rather than laid back and chilled. The record is more varied in tone as well as production.

Love that track. Used to have Q-Tip saying ‘the phone is ringing, oh ma God’ as a ringtone back in the day. It became completely unbearable after about 2 weeks.

These are all very good points and I agree. Would prefer if there was an explicit apology for it and the likes of Butter and Infamous Date Rape, as you say.

Will ATCQ go top 10?

The latter is really frustrating innit. It’s a commentary on the fact that consent is important, which is great, especially contextually. But there’s also unhelpful lines about false rape claims and being derogatory to someone who’s on their period. I’ve always interpreted Phife’s verse as being in character (there’s a definite contrast to Tip’s verses) but maybe that’s naive.
