She’s more annoying than not, but my god if You Oughta Know isn’t absolute perfection. 3 (2 for that song alone)

Good choice. How good is she really? I have no idea tbh:

  • I had a copy of Jagged Little Pill as a teenager
  • A handful of the singles off there were bangers
  • But then she became a bit of a punchline esp. with Ironic
  • Not sure how much of my perception is a fair appraisal and how much is down to an adolescence reading the NME (which was horribly sexist at the time). Maybe there’s real depth to her back catalogue and she’s just been written off, I don’t know.
  • Not really given her much thought since, until her recent renaissance

So yeah. 2 maybe? Would be consistent for someone whose music I don’t really enjoy but who isn’t a total stinker and who has a few songs I’d happily hear on the radio.

Loved JLP when it came out but I don’t know if it’s because I over listened it or the fact that it was everywhere I got really sick of it and never want to hear anything by her again.

Never heard anything else by her.

The fact i havent heard ‘Hand in my Pocket’ for about 15 years but can still remember exactly how it goes… Must mean something

Think I now associate her with that bit in The Trip more than anything else.

All of her songs are like those signs that say things like ‘live, laugh, love’ and ‘happiness is a journey, not a destination’. Meaningless, platitudinous nonsense.

I love her, she’s ridiculous and annoying and I totally understand why anyone would hate her, but I love her.

You Oughta Know is just the perfect break up song when you’ve been wronged.

Giving her a 5 as I suspect she will get a kicking.

No Alanis, no Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo. 5/5 just for You Oughta Know and for being underrated in her importance at expressing female anger and frustration to a generation used to earnest male voices. Can see why people would dislike her music tbh and most things past JLP that I’ve heard aren’t great but she seems like a good egg so she can have a generous 5.

Listened to JLP last year and was really disappointed in it (one or two tracks were ok, but the rest were pretty awful), but You Oughta Know is great

My favourite Alanis reference is when in the South Park movie someone burns a record of hers called Naked and Crying.

Still think Jagged Little Pill is a good to great album, but I gave the follow up one listen and don’t think I need to hear it or any of her other work again.

Amazing to think Ed Byrne has been selling out tours for a quarter of a century without changing up his Ironic routine. That speaks volumes to how much impact that Alanis had on popular culture.

Think a 3 is fair.

One time in 2002, i found myself midway through a 4 hour drive at 2am and screaming along with Jagged Little Pill was paramount in keeping me from falling asleep on the m42.

Odd that she only ever made one album.

What do you love more? Toast, or Jagged Little Pill?

Imagine if anyone votes for anything other than JLP? (5, obviously)

The follow up is good too

Presumably not enough to vote over JLP for though?

I definitely have “Would she go down on you in the theatre?” on a naff sign above my sink.
