The thing is though, even if that’s true, it’s still undoubtedly a better outcome than him being dead and the collectively accepted ā€œbetter to burn out than fade awayā€ narrative is dangerous bollocks which, I’d argue in the case of Winehouse, actually encouraged and manifested the ā€œburn outā€

not my thing (revival soul in the radio 1 mold) and don’t know much about her

dislike the production on her stuff

rehab is cool

seemed to resonate with a lot of girls that i knew back then so there must be something in it

probably had a bit of influence on that heavy kind of theatrical make-up thing that i’m not into

not offensively shit musically and not offensive lyrically

walked past her playing at glastonbury

classic 2

He did eat that massive breakfast though.

its a very stupid attitude to drug and alcohol problems (rock star ā€˜burn out than fade away’ thing) and i like to think that we’re past that nowadays

yeah true or he may have got the therapy he needed, spent a few years making art and come back to making music on his own terms at some point, or not. Who knows.

his true legacy.

Possibly yeah. Or at least when it comes to substance abuse, I feel like maybe mental health issues are replacing that in terms of romanticisation in some ways though. Probably talking out my arse on this but it feels like I’m very regularly seeing some young celeb/K-Pop star I’ve not heard of trending on Twitter having taken their own life and the discourse around it from their young fanbase is troublingly similar.

Old Neily Young was speaking about short lived musical projects that have impact, specifically the sex pistols, in that song too. Sad to think how it’s been misapplied to having a rock n roll lifestyle and dying young. Neil himself is testament to the sweetness of cleaning up and becoming a curmudgeonly old man.

aha. that’s bad, but also kind of interesting that mental health issues are romanticized. i’d never thought about that. love that mental health is part of the everyday vocabulary in the west though, great progress

this is funny imo

Actually probably quite true. I can still remember the interview she did with the NME prior to Back To Black coming out that seemed to get the ball rolling on the hype train.

Yeah, ā€˜Back To Black’ isn’t quite as good as it should be as the production is a bit…slick. It needs to be a bit more…gritty…or analogue sounding…or something…i;m struggling to articulate what i mean.

Lennon is a good example of this. McCartney became middle aged, Lennon didn’t. And Lennon is much more revered for it.

find it sounds like a lot of stuff production-wise from that late 00s period, which i never liked myself, a bit of a nadir in that respect. really hard to articulate yeah. just sounds a bit like its made on a computer.

Even if he’d been alive I don’t think Lennon would’ve written anything as bad as We All Stand Together

Got to be a 4 from me.

I feel like the Ronson production and big band sheen on a lot of her stuff let her down a bit, so I’m not exactly reaching to listen to her stuff.

But the songs and the voice, man. And a total star too.

It’s kinda moot to speculate, but if she’d been around in the advent of earlier, more cruder recording technology, and the recordings were more spare, more primitive, with less of an eye on chart placings, I think she’d have left an even more of a compelling legacy.

Is her dad Mitch widely thought of as a bit of a ghoul and not entirely blameless in the whole story or is that just me?

Actually disagree with this . With so many of those Daptone / soul and funk revival artists I find I always end up thinking why I am listening to this when I could be listening to original soul or funk? Don’t find that at all with Amy Winehouse. She has a better voice and miles better songs than all of the other revival artists.

Agree with a lot of what has been said about her circumstances and how she was treated by the UK press. The fact that they all now genuflect before her memory and people just seem to eat it up pretty much sums up a lot of what is wrong with this country’s relationship to the mainstream press (the ā€œlionessā€ shite makes me want to fucking puke). She also seemed to be surrounded by some genuine horror people. Whole thing is utterly awful.

Having said that, really don’t think the tragedy should be the main part of her story. She had a genuinely incredible voice and was a very gifted songwriter. Proper star quality too. Both of her albums are properly great - would really recommend anyone who can’t get on with her given them another go now the work can be removed from all of the drama. Just a real shame that there aren’t going to be any more. 5/5.
