šŸŽµ How Good Are They Really šŸŽµ Amy Winehouse

Good to remember this power couple too

No denying that. I just don’t think that Amy is thought of on the same level, beyond the tens of millions of mums who buy Adele’s albums.

Adele is a great vocalist too, why would it be unfair to group her in with Adele?

Yeah, I probably shouldn’t have used that name. Kurt Cobain’s mother came up with it in an interview way back when and I’m afraid it’s stuck with me. This whole death-at-27 thing horrifies me, though. So many people failed so badly by the people around them.

Adele is a -better- vocalist. It’s just not cool to like her, much in the same way it wasn’t ā€˜cool’ to like Amy Winehouse back in the day.

Despite the fact they occupy the same genre. Cant compare them though. Obviously.

Alhtough it has to be said I found Winehouses output marginally better as a whole

Nope, neither do I. I don’t think I’ve ever seen somebody make a case for any of Adele’s records being on Back to Black’s level

Not sure it’s purely about ā€˜coolness’ (or whatever). Both great singers for sure, but don’t think it’s that controversial an opinion to think Amy Winehouse is a better songwriter or to prefer Amy Winehouse’s songs to Adele’s

tbh my original post had a line about how she seemed to have been let down by everyone around her, her family, her husband, her management, her label. I didn’t include it in the end because her situation was complex and I’m not 100% sure she’d have been okay even with all that support, but basically yeah, I don’t think he’s the best.

only heard a few adele songs but they all sound pretty much the same, does she have any album tracks that sound different to that? also don’t hear much personality in her music at all

great voice though yeah

Oh yeah I think it was way beyond any one person or group of people to be able to ā€˜save’ her but I just get a really uneasy feeling about him and his role in her life.

On an individual level, I thought her dad came out of the documentary worse than anybody else, her husband included.

my cousin played the same gig as her one time, lower on the bill

he arrived while she was soundchecking, and when he walked in with whoever he was playing with they were all totally blown away by how good she was - just so powerful and charismatic

they soundchecked and played their set, and then waited with great excitement to watch Amy - but she was really pissed and just couldn’t perform properly.

he said it was one of the most brutally sad things he’d ever seen, knowing how good she’d been just a few hours earlier.

no particular thoughts on her music, but now that I’m a few years old than 27, it properly horrifies me when I actually think about the reality of people dying at that age.

Musically really not my cup of tea at all.

Although the last couple of times Back to Black has come on the radio I’m beginning to wonder if might have somehow crept up on me by stealth, as I found myself surprisingly moved by it.

Going to abstain though as a few singles I don’t plus one I grudgingly do is probably don’t qualify as an educated opinion.

Bizarre to rate a musician based upon only hearing two songs. The equivalent of stating that The Beatles deserve a 1 based upon only having listened to ā€˜Yellow Submarine’.

When actually they deserve a 1 for their entire musical output

Would rather listen to Adele than Winehouse imo, Adele has a load of hits

rolling in the deep, which is bad, and the james bond one, which is just a james bond song
loads

Chasing Pavements, Someone Like You, Hello, Set Fire to the Rain are all good to very good imo, and that’s just singles, can’t say I know her albums enough to know if there’s more gold there.

Don’t forget that one about meeting someone like you that sounds like someone pushing broken glass doused in acid directly into both your auditory nerves whilst waterboarding you with dishwater.
