Don’t forget that one about meeting someone like you that sounds like someone pushing broken glass doused in acid directly into both your auditory nerves whilst waterboarding you with dishwater.

just reminds me of drunks belting it out on their way home, bit weird really since it’s so maudlin

I really enjoy the fact it’s become a popular wedding song on the basis of the words ā€œsomeone like youā€ when the song is really not suitable for a wedding

When we were young is alright

Can’t really compare the two musically though that would be an odd thing to do.

We already did the Killers mate

Frank is the one i reach for cos give me hip-hop/r&b inspired production any day over soul revival stuff.

salaam remi produced the first two tracks… i woulda been down with 30 albums of this type of thing. shame

of course he produced my fav three tracks on b2b, too.

every time the in my bed beat starts in i get a rush waiting for nas to come in.

someone compared her to badu but i think lauryn hill is a closer comparison. they have something in their voices that’s kinda similar to me… also salaam remi worked on the fugees ā€˜the score’ so theres plenty overlap in sound too (moreso on frank, tho). october song sounds like a ā€˜miseducation of lauryn hill’ b-side or something.

dont think id ever heard the bonus track mr magic until last night but i cant help but love it cos it samples the greatest smooth jazz song of all time.

gotta go 4/5. not quite an all-time great for me but plenty to love. really really gross how the media treated her, wasnt quite the same over here in the u.s. but she was def still at the end of a lot of ā€˜jokes’ and hate. she was given no rope, no empathy, no compassion.

I saw Amy Winehouse in the Good Mixer pub in Camden playing pool. She was tiny. And about as drunk as I’ve ever seen another human being.

Shes got a great voice and some decent songs but never quite clicked for me musically.

An incredibly sad and young death.

A strong 3/5 for the music.

I also saw her in the Good Mixer once, getting chucked out because she hadn’t paid her tab for weeks. She was very pissed already and took it in good humour.

Musically I always thought she was pastiche, like she’d adopted her jazz singer persona and recorded some songs. Some of her lyrics are very sharp, witty and poetic though and that makes her much more interesting than someone like Adele.

As a person she reminded me of a very good friend who had similar issues and who was in an equally bad way at one point. In normal life and in the music industry there are so many people who egg on that self destructive hedonism because they find it entertaining, then disappear when it gets messy and I felt so sad for Amy that she didn’t have more people to protect her. Seeing her splashed on the pages of those crap free London papers in her worst moments and being shoved out on stage when she clearly needed help was horrifying.

Nothing really to add that’s not been covered numerous times. A tragic tale.
I think she had a great voice and phrasing, would have been really interesting to see how she would have progressed had it not turned out as it all did.

Listened to Back to Black today for the first time in years and it’s actually amazing. Possible that the space of a few years and it not being everywhere have made it sound fresher, but was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Also, Ronson’s production is fine, I’d even say it’s good. Think if it was anyone less annoying who’d done it there wouldn’t have been anywhere near as much criticism of it here.

Back to Black’s a great album. Ronson stole everything note-for-note from Spector but made it sound great, and found the perfect vehicle for Winehouse’s songs and voice.

This is an all-timer for me. Such a perfect song.

What’s with the Anti-Ronson sentiment in here? Generally think he’s quite good
